YAMASAN KYOTO UJI Japanese Nori Tsukudani Simmered Seaweed Paste, Umami and Sweet, Vegan, Low Fat, Versatile Condiment for Topping Rice and Various Dishes, Made in Japan (165g)

Description:

  • TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SEAWEED PASTE – Nori Tsukudani is a classic Japanese condiment made by simmering seaweed with soy sauce, raw sugar, and mirin into a smooth, savory-sweet paste. This beloved seaweed paste is rich in umami and is delicious on rice or used as a versatile seasoning.
  • TRIPLE-UMAMI SEAWEED FLAVOR – Made from Hitoegusa (sea lettuce), the only natural food containing all three major umami compounds—glutamic acid, inosinic acid, and guanylic acid. This creates a deep, full-bodied umami flavor that remains even when heated.
  • PREMIUM INGREDIENTS, EXPERTLY CRAFTED – Using high-quality seaweed from Mie Prefecture, this nori paste is slow-cooked whole to retain its natural aroma and texture. No cutting or artificial shortcuts—just pure, traditional flavor in every spoonful.
  • EASY-TO-USE TUBE FORMAT – Packaged in a handy squeeze tube, this seaweed condiment is convenient to use one-handed. It’s vegan, preservative-free, and easy to add to dishes anytime, anywhere.
  • SO MANY WAYS TO ENJOY – Perfect on steamed rice, but also delicious with udon, tofu, risotto, pasta, natto, salads, or even pizza. Mix it with mayonnaise, olive oil, or wasabi for unique dipping sauces—or pair with cheese for a bold twist. A must-have Japanese umami seasoning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice flavour but so much sugar

    Y.R. · 29 March 2025

This YAMASAN KYOTO UJI Japanese Nori Tsukudani Simmered Seaweed Paste has lovely seaweed flavour with gooey texture. However, I’m surprised the amount of sugar in it - the nutrition information shows 3g of sugar in 9g (1/2 tablespoon) which equates to 33g of sugar per 100g! At least it is not something you would eat in large quantity but more as a condiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, and a great thing to have in the fridge.

While this isn't a taste for everyone, I find it really delicious, and utterly moreish. It's a very traditional rice topping in Japan - nori seaweed cooked down with soy sauce and mirin, giving a deeply savoury, umami-rich paste. It looks questionable, but is marvellous on rice. Indeed it makes rice feel far more like a meal that just a side dish. There are many other uses, too, of course. It's delicious in o-nigiri.I wish there was information on the packet about how long it lasts - something this salty presumably lasts a little while, but it would be good to know. This packet is really convenient and easy to pop in the fridge and use regularly. It's one of those ingredients that gives an immediate and polished Japanese flavour to very simple meals.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too little and too plain in taste

    K.C. · 23 May 2025

I liked it a lot but that’s after I boosted the taste. It was bland but that’s ok since I found ways to make better. It better with rice, parathas , mix with your version of sushi dip and it’s good with sushi and samosa, mix with your version of satay sauce and it’s amazing on plain rice with grilled steak.UNFORTUNATELY the size is too small and doesn’t stretch far

5.0 out of 5 stars Another interesting thing I got to try for the first time

    0. · 26 March 2025

While I have certainly had soy sauce before this which is a seaweed paste of sorts is completely new to me so I was certainly quite excited to try it. Admittedly at first I was dumb enough to think this was literally just seaweed that was mashed up but there is more to it than than, in fact it apparently has some mirin in it too which is a type of rice wine that's very much a Japanese cooking staple but not something I think I've tried before literally ever. The result is a paste that's got quite a nice sweetness to it and goes great on top of a bed of rice and as a huge fan of the latter it was obvious I would love the result. Perhaps not something I would get all too often since it doesn't seem as versatile as some other things but certainly something I would recommend giving a try at least once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Salty but sweet taste

What an unusual taste this Japanese Nori Tsukudani Simmered Seaweed Paste has. It offers a real umami and sweet but salty taste, It is quite versatile and I like it quite simply with rice or even cheese – I would never have thought of using this paste with cheese but it is mentioned in the listing so I gave it a try. It works well, like a salty chutney that adds real depth of flavour. I have tried it in several ways including as a dip mixed with mayo. It does oomph up a cooked dish with a taste provided by the Nori the sea lettuce which contain three flavour profiles not found anywhere else in one ingredient. Once mixed with soya sauce and the other ingredients it really does create a unique taste. Good for simple foods like cheese on toast and excellent with plain or fried rice and sushi. I like the packaging which is a squeezy pouch that is easy to get the quantity of the paste out that you want and then reseal the pouch.

This seaweed paste is so tasty and you can use it in a variety of ways, not just with Japanese cuisine. It is slightly sweet, salty and with a deep umami taste. It's a thick paste but is easy to squeeze out of the pouch and the screw top helps to keep it fresh in between uses.I like it with a bit of hummus and some carrot sticks but it goes well with cheese too, in my opinion.A little goes a long way which is good as it's a bit expensive for a treat.
