Description:

EXTRAORDINARY 1973 ZEPPELIN UK BROADCAST • Led Zeppelin released their fourth album on 8 November 1971. Variously referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, Untitled, IV, or, due to the four symbols appearing on the record label, Four Symbols, Zoso or Runes. The band had wanted to release the album with no title or information, in response to the music press "going on about Zeppelin being a hype", but the record company wanted something on the cover, so in discussions it was agreed to have four symbols to represent both the four members of the band and that it was the fourth album. With 37 million copies sold, Led Zeppelin IV is one of the best-selling albums in history, and its massive popularity cemented Led Zeppelin's status as superstars in the 1970s. • "Stairway to Heaven", never released as a single, was the most requested and most played song on American rock radio in the 1970s. The group followed up the album's release with tours of the UK, Australasia, North America and Japan, from late 1971 through early 1973. • One of the very final shows of the tour was also one of the best. On January 7th ’73, Zeppelin played at the New Theatre in Oxford, UK. The concert was stunning and the entire event was recorded and broadcast on local FM Radio. • Previously unreleased, this superb gig is now available for the first time on this new 2CD set. I was at this gig 50 years ago . So great nostalgia- truly like going back in time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Zeppelin Live and loud....3.5 stars

So what are we looking at here,a live recording of the greatest British rock band from more than half a century ago, yes, half a century,so im not expecting top drawer audio.Having purchased many bootleg tapes/vinyl and cd's of many bands i, aware that quality audio can be hard to find, sometime the sheer excitement and atmosphere can carry you thru. While not being as good audio quality as the recent 'Inner City Blues',this still is worth listening to.Disc 1 is pretty good, track listing excellent and includes Bron -Yr-Aur Stomp which isnt present on the aforementioned 'Inner City Blues'.The major disappointment,is disc 2,sadly 'Whole Lotta love, fades after 3 minutes,so the 2nd disc is just over 40 minutes and loses several tracks that would have been played that night.. IF your expecting 'official ' release audio quality, look elsewhere,if you are realistic about the sound quality you will get enjoyment from this but be disappointed by disc 2's abrupt ending

2.0 out of 5 stars awful- avoid

its hit and miss with the FM transmissions we've been getting of late, and this is a big swing and a miss. the only saving grace is Roberts vocals are actually on fire in this, the rest of the mix is woeful. JB is on fine form, as is JPJ, JP guitar is lost in most of the mixes but hey who buys a LZ album for the awesome guitar i guess? i bought this one as im from oxford had some nostalgia for the a rare recording from the home town, but i returned it as soon as i listened to it, just such a waste of time and money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great …unless completist avoid

Sounds quite compressed … a poor listen … stick to the Southampton recording from same tour .. much much better … I’d avoid

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality as good as source version

S.S. · 7 May 2024

I'd missed out on this in the 90s when it emerged on bootleg CD, so was happy to see this available on Bolo. Sound quality to my ears is as good as the source, and it's as complete as the source, so no complaints there. My gripe would be that "Dazed" could have fitted onto Disc 1, leaving enough space on Disc 2 to include the soundboard recording of the set finale of either Bradford, Dundee or Liverpool from the same tour - these pick up roughly where Oxford leaves off, so would have complemented each other nicely. Otherwise, this was what I'd hoped for and would recommend this to collectors, if not Zep Live newcomers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but prety good

R.R. · 4 May 2023

It would seem that some reviewers expet 100% top audio quality from a 50+ year broadcast recording, wheich most of us know is not realityBut this CD is well worth having if youre a collector and a decent addition Zep collection for the realistic fan.
