Description:
Originally released in 1983, 'Soul Mining' is the major label debut album by post-punk outfit The The, fronted by Matt Johnson. Featuring the singles 'Uncertain Smile', 'Perfect', and the iconic 'This Is The Day', the album, which is Gold-certified in the UK, has been long out of print on vinyl, except as part of a limited run 30th anniversary 2 LP box set reissue in 2014. Featuring a host of talented musicians, including JG Thirwell (aka Foetus, Manorexia and Steroid Maximus), Zeke Manyika (Orange Juice), electronic DIY pioneer Thomas Leer and Jools Holland, Matt Johnson set out with a clear vision in mind - to produce an album that felt cinematic; a record of width, depth and texture and one which avoided the mundane line-up of two guitars, bass and drums. Lauded with critical acclaim ('Soul Mining is a brilliant and very idiosyncratic album' - The Guardian ; 'Like shaving lotion applied to cleanse a wound, Johnson's songs are attractively scented and sting like hell' - Melody Maker) the music and lyrics of 'Soul Mining' are as fresh and relevant today as they were almost 40 years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant album beautifully repackaged
indisputably one of the great albums of the 80s - on of the all-time greats in my books – Soul Mining is a work of uncatagorisable songwriting genius with truly innovative instrumentation, great hooks, and that memorable Jools Holland piano solo on Uncertain Smile.Soul Mining never quite achieved the acclaim it deserved, but that makes it all the sweeter for those of us who can revel in its semi-secret glory. The excellent 2014 vinyl reissue augments the seven original tracks another disc of with remixes and additional tracks (including two takes of Perfect, which was on the cassette and CD version in the 80s but excised more recently) plus a voucher for a digital download lovingly captured from Matt Johnson's own record player (you can just about hear the hiss). If you're a fan, buy it. If you're not… give it a listen.
5.0 out of 5 stars Essential.
I was 18 when this album came out and it articulated everything I was too young to figure out how to say. Now I’m in my late ‘50’s and it’s even more resonant. Regret. Loss. Desire. Hope. The lot is here. An essential album.
5.0 out of 5 stars 27 years -why??
OK- The The have been on my radar for years. I knew of this album when it was released thanks to a certain Mr Peel (God bless him) but why I gave it a wide berth until the age of 43 is beyond me.I bought 'Dusk'in 1993 because of the wonderful 'Slow Emotion Replay' but somehow managed to ignore the rest of Mr Johnson's output. The opening track of Soul Mining smacks you in the face and demands you listen. Then you are wooed by the wonderful 'This Is The Day'-perfect and uplifting.'The Sinking Feeling','Uncertain Smile' and 'Giant' are other highlights but the 7 song collection loses no quality with the two other tracks.Much regret. If I'd have purchased this album at 16 instead of 43 it would have formed the part of my life that it will from now on.A fantastic album and I will be making up for lost time as far as The The are concerned.
4.0 out of 5 stars Whimsical and lyrical
I originally picked up "Soul Mining" years after first listening to Infected and Mind Bomb to death. This early album is almost whimsical by comparison to the other two but you can hear the seeds of Matt Johnson's sound and his utterly amazing talent for language and rhyming coming to the fore even on this album."This is the Day" is obviously the standout track, the soundtrack to many a summertime of my youth. Not as keen on this as I was on the other albums mentioned above but it's still worthy of your collection
5.0 out of 5 stars A classic! Best album ever!
Best album in the world by the best artist. We all know Soul Mining for the classic it is. What you get is a super high quality deluxe package here. I was nervous that I would need to buy a record player to burn to mp3 but Bolo give you the older Soul Mining as a free rip and you also get to download Matt's rip from his personal player! I can never get enough of Soul Mining - if you don't have it or have never heard it - you really are missing out.
