There are cheaper versions on Bolo but this one had better reviews and was the Bolo choice. I also bought an “HDTV Video capture”. There is no maker’s name on it but it’s named RUOVXWU on the Bolo website. It was only £6.99. I would call it an “HDMI to USB video converter”. Confusingly they variously call it a card and a device. My goal was to be able to copy video from my Sky + HD box and my VHS recorder onto my laptop to preserve the clips and edit them for posting on YouTube, partly because VHS tapes degrade with time. I bought the two converters above and downloaded the widely recommended OBS Studio software, which is free. I ordered the hardware on Wednesday and it arrived next day. I wanted to keep my TV connected to my Sky box via the HDMI to HDMI cable so I could see what was happening. However I was concerned that connecting five pieces of hardware together with unfamiliar software might be unlikely to work thanks to compatibility issues. In the end it all worked well. My first concern was that copy protection on the Sky box would prevent me from copying. But, of course, copy protection is only on the HDMI output of the Sky box so by using the SCART output, which is analogue, that was not a problem. The SCART to HDMI converter is described as being 60Hz but the UK is 50Hz. However that wasn’t a problem. I was a bit concerned that the converter needs a 5V 1A power supply. Unfortunately this SCART to HDMI converter only supports SCART Composite input, and not SCART RGB so there may be some picture quality loss there. However the final resulting picture quality looked good to me. It claims to be compatible with an STB. I assume STB stands for set top box. It ”supports” PAL, PAL/M, PAL/N. As the UK is PAL/I, I was a bit concerned but there might be a problem but I didn’t find any problem there. The “user manual” states that it would become hot. I found that it only became warm. It is guaranteed for 1 year. They provide an email address for queries. The HDMI to USB converter user manual states that it works for 30Hz and 60 Hz. Again it works on 50 Hz. It claims to be compatible with OSB Studio video capture software. Which it is. I was a bit concerned that the converter needs a 5V 0.4A power supply on top of the 1A needed for the SCART to HDMI converter. I was not sure that my laptop could safely deliver that much current through its USB sockets but I tried it anyway without any problem. They claim it works on Windows 10, not mentioning Windows 11. I found it works on Windows 11. Confusingly the manual reads “Connect the computer to the type-c port of the video capture with type -c cable”. What they mean is connect the USB plug into a USB socket on your computer. OK the USB plug is USB type c. The leaflet for the capture card warns that it may get hot. It only got warm. Having an aluminium case looks like a good design feature. I chose this converter because of this and that it has USB 3 high speed capability which I thought might be helpful rather than the Bolo recommended device which is USB 2 and costs more.It seems like an odd way of doing things taking the analogue output from the Sky box or VHS recorder converting it to HDMI then using another converter to convert from HDMI to USB but I took the risk and it has all worked, to my slight surprise and great pleasure. There may be a more elegant way and/or better picture quality way of achieving this but it worked and it is a cheap and effective solution. The OSB software is very complex, not intuitive so I got an echo on the sound recording. I moved the Mic/Aux slide to zero and used earphones but that didn’t fully clean up the sound. Using OBS Studio for editing is not intuitive so I used AVS Video editor which is pretty intuitive. I’m very pleased with the results.
5.0 out of 5 stars Neat, small and functional. Buy it!
Well, to be honest, it does exactly what it says it'll do. Had it plugged in and working within 5 minutes of it arriving. Picture and sound both clear and good. Zero issues, well done. Unit small and easily tucked away behind the TV.
4.0 out of 5 stars This thing works!
Never realised such a device was available! Worked straight out of the box. So an old DVD recorder/player which had faulty HDMI output was useful again via SCART output.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good bit of kit
Good bit of kit which has got my old VCR with SCART outputs working with a TV with only HDMI inputs. Works very well. If the picture quality is poor, make sure the device is set to 720 rather than 1080 using the switch on its side.
5.0 out of 5 stars Nifty little cable that does the job!
It simply did the job. My DVD recorder is now connected to my TV and I can also have sound through my soundbar! So all good! Easy to use, just make sure you have long enough cables, depending on your setup.
3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best...
Not great, output image was kind of off. And again little fuzzy. Maybe a bad unit, returned the product for a refund.
5.0 out of 5 stars Superb performance.
I really didn't think that this would work, having asked the salesman at Currys about them (he didn't have one to sell) and getting a very negative reaction. Especially when I told him I was connecting up my 27 year old Sony DVD player. It actually works extremely well. Sure, it can't correct the patchy quality of the original recordings, but it feels like no further quality has been lost by the converter. Easy enough to fit too. The power cord connects to the USB port on the back of the TV, should you not have a handy USB socket on the wall.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great to use my old DVD player
Internet streaming is great, but sometimes old school DVDs are best, especially when only one episode of a series is available free on Netflix and the rest have to be purchased.Enter my ancient Panasonic DVD player, very solid and still working but (horror!) no HDMI socket, just Scart.Luckily I read some of the reviews for this converter and bought a USB plug at the same time. and made sure I had two available sockets.Easy to set up and works perfectly (only had it a few days)I'm deducting a star because I think it should come with the USB plug. It would be inconvenient to swap over another plug all the time.
