No sub needed for TV/movies. However if you can't be in the center sweet spot, for whatever reason, with ~40-45° of toe in, I'm getting a good stereo image from any seat on the couch, with the D300s 8 or 9 feet apart. They're about 24" out from the wall. I don't feel the need for a subwoofer.

    D300's DOA Don't buy these!

    A.B. · 8 August 2023

D300 purchsed July 2023. Speakers were dead on arrival. Right out of the box. Plugged into 3 different clean power sources. No power. No sound. DOA. Hard to believe speakers priced like these could arrive not working at all, right from the factory. Unexcusable failure on quality control. Furthermore, got a return authorization from Bolo the same day and returned the defective goods, and over 2 weeks later, still cannot get a refund. Do not buy speakers from this company! They are trying to place themselves in the market with Edifier, which i should have stuck with for new living room speakers, but they are producing sub standard products, and providing horrible customer service. If you take the chance, you could wind up with no speakers, and out $652 like me.Update: Finally received a refund Aug. 10. So at least a refund was processed. Wish I just would have received a working pair of speakers. Disappointing.

Failed twice in 2 years. Slow support. Hard to recommend reliability

    D. · 5 February 2023

Update: Gave these to a friend to tinker with. The unit failed due to blown/swollen caps. There was a ridiculous amount of glue holding the circuit board and power switch to the back mounting plate and required breaking the switch to remove. Once the switch and caps were replaced the unit fired back up and are living on with a new owner.Update: Support took a very long time but did get back to me. They couldn't fix the problem but did offer a nice discount on another product. Not a perfect solution but it does help lessen the pain. I used the discount to try the OS-10 desk speakers. They have had no issues with an external smart power switch like the d300s had. Maybe it was a model specific issue or just my pair.Previous review (+ indicates an update):Pros:Great cost to performance ratioGood looking speakers (imo)Very loud in your face sound. Good for 2 or 2.1 theaterSounds really good with amazing bass extension for its size. Much more sound than my old Linn system. Left the sub off most the time.+Now that I have new speakers, I realize just how well these speakers filled my oddly shaped room with sound and were not particular about placement. I think my new speakers sound better (at double the price), but boy are they picky about placement. Something that I took for granted with the swansCons:Feels a little cheapConnection cord between speakers too short to hide. New speakers have option for longer cord nowNo sub out. I had to run a sub from my tv with separate volume control to get around thisVolume increments a little too big. Goes from quiet to loud very quicklyQuality issuesSupport was very slow to respondCannot handle cutting the power from an external source (smart switches, power strips, power outages)Speakers failed immediate upon arrival and wouldn't power on after turning the unit off with a smart switch. Unit wouldn't power up for about 24 hours but then somehow came back to life. Since then, I've had this plugged into the wall and powered on 24/7.Tried to contact support multiple times via phone and emails. No response.Recently, power went out. Swans again will not turn back on. No power light, no response. There is no method of resetting this unit. There is no fuse to replace that I could find. This time it's been dead for quite some time, and I don't think it's coming back to life this time.Contacted every email and phone I could find on Swans and Hivis websites. Again, no response. ** Swans support reached out about 2 weeks after my request. They could not provide repair or replacement but offered a discount on future orders.I got the speakers for around $500 which seemed like a good deal at the time. At current prices (399) I think it's still a decent deal for performance. But hard to recommend due to reliability. I'm avoiding active speakers for my main system in the future. I'd rather invest in a great set of speakers and buy the components separately. If there's a failure in the future, it's much cheaper to replace the individual component that failed then having to replace the entire active speaker.

1st One Stopped Working, Replacement Pair Working Great (So Far)

    B. · 7 June 2022

They are pretty, dead simple to set up, and sound great. I loved these speakers until the remote/source indicator stopped responding suddenly one day before the warranty expired (close call).I hope the replacement process goes well since I had recycled the original packaging and have to return the old speakers in the box for the new ones. The original order was very slow to arrive. If you spring for these, hold on to the giant boxes/packaging until the warranty is up and don't expect much support from the vendor.Updated 6/12/2022 - Bolo rep sent a second pair quickly that have been working great (so far). Returning the first pair to Bolo was frustrating. Only had 2 options to return: 1) UPS pickup at my house, 2) Take heavy box to UPS Store across town during business hours. Tried having UPS pick up for 2 days but they only came during the day while I was at work. Ultimately had to be late for work one day to take to the UPS store as I was running out of time for the return window. I am a little worried that the remote will stop working at some point and I will be unable to change inputs. I could always manage volume with an external knob or the one on the back of the right speaker (awkward) but changing inputs would be impossible without a working remote.Again, the speakers sound GREAT and I love them and it is amazing to be able to get them from across the world relatively quickly for a very reasonable price. I alternate between having them at my desk (comically big for that use) and on the weekends I put them at the TV for movie nights. I really hope that the issue I had with my first pair is a rare occurrence.Update 1/15/2024 : The speakers stopped producing sound! I've tried everything I can think of and am super bummed. Not convinced that the quality control and longevity is there with Swan as I've had to return them before. These are my replacement speakers.Update 1/25/2024: After much troubleshooting, Swan support sent me another set of D300s and I paid to send back my old ones. Their customer support was helpful despite the time difference (China) and once everything is working they (once again) sound fantastic.

Audiophile in a box (2 actually)

    ..g. · 15 May 2022

Bought these around 5/1/2022. Already have the Swans D1090 and Edifier S2000mkiii. Have two rooms, a 200 sq/ft office and a large living room with 20 ft ceilings. While the Edifiers sound great in the office, the D300's simply feel too powerful (if there is such a thing). But the Edifiers fail spectacularly in the living room, while the D1090's perform well in either. That was until we bought a piano which crowded the placement and caused bass resonances at mid-high volume. The D300's are indifferent to poor placement. They project a wider sound stage, deeper bass and more top-end detail than the D1090's - and do so at any volume - way more than I would care to listen to. Out of the box, the ribbon tweeters are too hot and "sharp" sounding. But they can be dialed down a db or two while still retaining excellent detail. They also have a rather high crossover at 3k. This results in a thinner low-high/upper-mid than the D1090's, sounding a bit less lush at times, while accentuating the sense of spaciousness & openness.Ultimately a 3-way system like Swans M300mkii would perform even better in the mid-range, for 50% more in price. But a 300W 2-way with ribbon tweeters and startling bass extension, bi-amped in attractive enough cabinets...?? If you want to fill a large room to audiophile standards, and can only part with around $500, then you can research this to death (highly recommended as there's some great content out there), only to conclude same as I that there's nothing even close to the D300's - save for the D1090's.
