This is a track reader (as is described) rather than writer so its utility is limited. It could be incorporated as part of an entry system but reliability suggests a contactless or RFID system would be preferrable. Another use, my use, is curiosity. The reader, when plugged into a Windows PC, becomes a keyboard emulator. The text on the magnetic stripe transfers to, eg, Notepad - which is what I used in my examination of numerous cards. These were credit and debit cards, membership cards, library cards etc. Vbestlife's reader is good at this, but it is not perfect. It may be the fault of the stripe and the operator (me) as much as the reader's.First. In my exploration, never could any card be read in one specific direction. This despite the reader being, supposedly, bi-directional. Indeed, this is inscribed in the housing. Second, some cards needed to be swiped twice before being read. Some could I read first time. Initially, I thought this was me, but the effect was consistent. Some cards needed to be swiped twice, although they could then be read immediately on a third, fourth, fifth time etc. However, if another card was read, then the first, it needed swiping twice, again. Other cards would consistently read on the first pass. Third, occasionally, some characters from a pass were missing. I know this because I swiped everything multiple time, just in case. Again this was only sometimes but always on specific cards. Perhaps the magnetism in the stripe was wearing out. I don't know. Of all the cards I examined, only two had any information on Track 2 and none had information on Track 3.This is an interesting reader for exploring magnetic stripe data, and very easy to use. The next stage would be a reader-writer but that, alas, would cost nearly ten times as much.
