Description:
- Strawberry is a new Cherry Red imprint. Picking up where the mighty RPM Records have left off, Strawberry will shine a light on collectible 60s and 70s recordings, from themed compilations to single artist anthologies and occasional album reissues.
- Halcyon Days is inspired by RPM’S bespoke compilations Looking Back, Keep Lookin’ and Night Comes Down. It charts the development of mod friendly beat music across three CDs from the jazzy R&B of Chris Farlowe, Duffy Power with Graham Bond and Zoot Money that opens disc one through horn laden Brit soul from Jimmy James, Geno Washington and The Richard Kent Style, ska from Mickey Finn & The Blue Men, girl group pop from The Chantelles and fuzz drenched freakbeat from The Pretty Things and The Worrying Kynde. On disc three the influence of psychedelia becomes apparent on offerings by Jason Crest, July and Dantalian’s Chariot.
- Bands featured include The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Pretty Things, The Creation, The Action, The Artwoods, John’s Children, The Spencer Davis Group, Brian Auger & The Trinity and The Fleur De Lys.
- There are early singles from future super stars David Bowie and Rod Stewart plus early recordings from Jimmy Page with Mickey Finn & The Blue Men and alongside Jeff Beck in The Yardbirds, Steve Howe in The In Crowd, Greg Lake in The Shame and Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in The Graham Bond Quartet. Mick Fleetwood drums for The Bo Street Runners, future Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore backs Heinz, his Purple bandmate Jon Lord is organist in The Artwoods, Rolling Stone Bill Wyman produces The End and Denny Laine later to join Paul McCartney in Wings sings with The Moody Blues.
- Producer Mike Hurst opens his archives allowing us to include freakbeat nuggets from The Australian Playboys, The Human Instinct, The Favourite Sons, Double Feature and The Oscar Bicycle plus orchestrated pop gems from the soulful Truly Smith, psychedelic The Alan Bown!, Swedish mods The Tages and dramatic singing twins Paul & Barry Ryan.
- First time on CD rarities include British R&B, soul and mod beat tracks from The Athenians, The Fingers, The Candy Dates, Barney J. Barnes & The Intro, Kevin ‘King’ Lear, Dorian Gray, Barry St. John, Ray French, Laris McLennon and Sleepy plus there are previously unissued recordings by The SW4, The Union and The Trendbender Band.
- Includes a booklet with track by track annotation, crammed full of rare pictures including gig posters, sheet music and band photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars This box set will grow on you.
Am listening to this box set yet again. There are some great 60"s MOD, R&B, Brit Soul and Freakbeat nuggets. I really enjoy it. Worth listening to.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
I like these compilations got a few now all in all pretty good.
5.0 out of 5 stars Ace selection of mod friendly British R&B, soul and freakbeat!
This a brilliant compilation with disc 1 containing mainly R&B, beat and soul with a little ska, disc 2 featuring more aggressive freakbeat and disc 3 more freakbeat, 60s Brit pop and a hint of psychedelia. Mod favourites such as Buzz With The Fuzz by Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds, Big Time Operator by Zoot Money's Big Roll Band and Biff, Bang, Pow by The Creation are included along with fantastic rarities such as the fuzz laden Get Goin' Baby by Dorian Gray and the Hammond organ groove of Mr. Pearly by Kevin 'King' Lear and previously unreleased obscurities including the excellent version of Don Covay's See Saw by The Union with the future Elmer Gantry on vocals and a version of Solomon Burke's Stupidity by The Trendbender Band. The discs are sequenced more or less chronologically and flow really well giving a great listening experience. There are gems from The Pretty Things, The Animals, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Brian Auger, David Bowie etc. with refreshingly not the most obvious hits chosen. An essential purchase for fans of Modish beat music!
3.0 out of 5 stars One for the long haired Herbert's.
Good compilation disc 1 excellent but it's gets progressively freakier as it moves on. Ideal if you like a longer hair / paisley shirt 3rd gen mod - rocky / freakbeat groove less so if you are a sharp suited modernist.
5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
Really good eclectic collection of dance floor moddish tracks from the sixties. Lots of new stuff to me and some standards from bands like the small faces..
4.0 out of 5 stars Tunes I didn't know !

Many new to U.S. ears!!
Bolo’s “editorial review” plus Runmentionable’s fine review covers pretty much everything. Just to add, all cuts play back at a uniform volume level (great for ripping/burning playlists in Windows Media Player – all songs are correctly identified in WMP). All 3 discs are full. I grew up in the US during this period, so it’s great to hear so much new-to-my-ears music in one place. The 48-page booklet is HIGHLY informative about each song and artist, including dates, label, and release format. More box sets please from CherryRed/Strawberry for us boomers!
Great!
Mostly good. There's some tracks which are not that memorable, but the good ones make me wonder why the bands playing them weren't much more famous, or even much more famous than say The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. The second disc is my favourite, and the third disc feels mostly like shameless fillers, although that's just my opinion. I don't regret buying it though. Well worth the price!
