I liked it so much I just ordered the 5-wt to use as my multi-purpose rod. Both rods were available below Sage's retail price. A very nice well built fast action rod that darn near casts itself. Stop the forward cast high and watch the line fly.

Rod is good, but damage to rod tube.

This item arrived at my house with zero damage on the box. That being said I figured the inside would look the same. I was wrong. As you can see from the pictures the rod tube was damaged and looked like it had be scraped all up before it was packaged. Thankfully the, almost, 600 dollar rod was not damaged. I neglected to do an exchange simply for a rod tube. I feel like the company could have done a better job especially on such an expensive rod. This is the most excited I have ever been to purchase a rod in my life and I was let down.

First of all, the rod is fantastic. Excellent construction, fit, finish and very fast action, typical Sage quality. My complaint was the condition of the rod case. The case itself is a very nice black powder aluminum. But it arrived scratched and scuffed, shipped placed in a cardboard box with no bubble wrap or additional protective cushioning. The case looks like it’s rolled around in the bed of a pickup truck for a couple of weeks. Initially I thought that this was a used item or someone had switched an old case for a new one. I was really dismayed that a $600 rod and case would be shipped that way and the condition it arrived in.

Great rod, but seller’s poor packing causes loss of a star

First, the rod. I purchased the 9ft 4-piece 6-weight rod, and I don’t think I’ve ever made a better fly-fishing choice than this rod. It’s comfortable in the hand, extremely well balanced, with a fast but smooth action, with a good “feel” one doesn’t always get with fast rods. It performed superbly for me during the initial getting-to-know-each-other local outing, and equally well if not better on a recent fly-fishing trip to northern Michigan to the Manistee and Au Sable Rivers. To put it through its paces and then some, I used it in circumstances in which I’d normally use a five- or even four-weight rod, including up-close-and-personal small stream work. It’s not a slender and sensitive finesse rod for such, but it did nearly as well as my darling 4-weight in such circumstances. I also used it going long—forty-to-fifty foot casts were a breeze. And when the weather’s breeze became an outright wind, it allowed me to send even small dries where I wanted them to go. I love this rod. If I could only have one, this would be it.But…the packing. The rod arrived in its four-sleeve cloth wrap inside a nice aluminum rod case. The case was placed inside a 5”x5” about three-feet long box. A small section of kraft paper, about 1x3 ft, was thrown in with it, but not even wadded to pretend it would supply padding. There were no dents in the rod case, but it was scuffed a bit in a couple spots, corresponding to where the long box itself had obviously been compressed, banged about, etc. When one buys a $650 rod, one simply expects better than what the folks at The Kingfisher (the seller for my purchase here on Bolo) did. Yeah, it got here. And the rod itself is wonderful. But…it would’ve been nice to see that they cared about protecting it a bit more than just putting it inside a box to flop around like an excited small brown in a big net.
