Sony SEL40F25G - Full-Frame Lens FE 40mm F2.5 G - Premium G Series Prime Lens

Description:

  • INCREDIBLY SHARP: State-of-the-art optics, using three aspherical elements, deliver high resolution and suppress colour fringing in all parts of the image. Delivering high corner-to-corner resolution and beautiful bokeh, this is an excellent compact, lightweight, full frame lens for cityscapes, landscapes and videography, these features making it an ideal portrait lens too.
  • BEAUTIFULLY SMOOTH BACKGROUNDS: A 7-blade circular aperture on this Sony lens creates beautiful circular background bokeh defocus effects with a large F2.5 aperture.
  • FAST AND PRECISE: Two linear motors deliver fast, precise AF with excellent tracking capability, fully utilising the continuing rapid advances in the speed performance of camera bodies. Taking maximum advantage of this performance, tracking is maintained despite instantaneous changes in subject motion, making the lens ideal for situations like snap shooting of moving subjects. You'll never miss a shot with this lightweight and compact lens.
  • SUPERB BUILD QUALITY: The high-quality build uses metal (aluminium) for the exterior finish and hood, achieving a sophisticated look, contributing to increased strength and durability. The iris ring indices, focal length markings, and Sony logo on the hood of the 40mm lens, are engraved rather than printed, giving a finish with a sophisticated feel.
  • GREAT FOR MOVIE SHOOTING: The fast, precise AF with excellent tracking performance delivered by two linear motors is also quiet, making this FE lens ideal for both still and movie shooting. A great 40mm wide view (or when mounted on an APS-C body or shooting in Super 35mm movie format, the angle of view is 36mm equivalent), intuitive operability, in a compact, lightweight design.

  • Introducing the SEL40F25G Full Frame Lens: A wide angle lens for stills and movies. Featuring an advanced optical design that includes three aspherical elements for incredible corner-to-corner high-resolution, along with beautiful background defocus (bokeh). Two double linear motors provide fast, precise AF with excellent tracking performance, with quiet autofocus and tracking in this compact-sized and lightweight Sony G lens. Internal focusing ensures the angle of view is stable during focusing (focus breathing minimised). An incredible video lens, the SEL40F25G delivers smooth, fast and continuous auto focus performance for movie shooting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Compact Lenses for My Sony A7C!

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I’ve been using the Sony 40mm f/2.5G and 24mm f/2.8G lenses with my Sony A7C, and they’ve quickly become my go-to pairing. Both lenses are incredibly compact and lightweight, which matches the A7C perfectly for a truly portable setup. The 40mm f/2.5G offers a beautiful balance of sharpness and a natural perspective, making it versatile for everything from portraits to street photography. The 24mm f/2.8G, on the other hand, gives me that wider angle that’s perfect for landscapes and architecture, as well as street, with great sharpness and color rendition even at the edges. Both lenses have solid, premium builds with aperture rings, and the image quality has exceeded my expectations in all lighting conditions. Autofocus is fast and generally accurate. More importantly since these are so much lighter and compact, I’ve realised I take a lot more photos and carry it around more often than before. If you’re looking for high-quality, compact primes to pair with the A7C, these lenses are a fantastic choice. Highly recommended!

I wanted a good everyday lens to capture shots as I see them, this lens did not disappoint and has not left my camera since.Small and light with excellent AF and image quality I can highly recommend if your looking for that simple point and shoot experience from your Sony camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this

Love this lens. I have this for my A7C.I have 28mm f2 which is also compact but this one is a little more so and the focal length of this is great because I found myself using Super 35 mode with my 28mm lens which equates to 42mm focal length. The build quality is great, very premium and when on the camera, feels likes it’s part of the camera.I reviewed extensively on what focal length I should I go for in terms of casual, street photography and kept coming to this 40mm and when I saw this compact version, although it’s only f2.5, I had to go for it because it’s a Sony lens, so no compromises in terms of quality or functionality features!!It has aperture ring, focus ring, and a customisable function button. I didn’t know how much I would appreciate and make use of the rings!! Aperture ring is great to use compared to using built in ring that’s on the camera, as on my A7C, I have a thumb grip attached and it makes it a little difficult to access the ring but with this lens it’s great! Pricey but I believe this is a great lens to have on my camera (actually, the only one when I go out in London or travel wherever else). I own this 40mm, the 28mm (which I stopped using as much sadly) and then the 35-150 tamron (which is intended for more professional photoshoots - and oh is it great, seriously check it out).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic first lens for compact full frame setup- will you ever need another lens?

Bought this for my new ZV-E1 after a lot of research. I am coming from a Nikon Z30, so wanted a compact setup. For reference the ZV-E1 is actually very slightly smaller than a Z30.This lens is therefore in my opinion THE first lens to buy if one of your primary drivers is a compact setup and you are buying say a ZV-E1, or the new A7Cii. There’s other cheaper options such as the Samyang 18mm which is slightly wider, but I’ll come onto why I went with this. The lens is tiny. I have the 24/F1.7 new small Nikon APSC lens for my Z30 (which is really a 36/25.5 in full frame) and the lenses are almost exactly the same size. That means this is tiny. It is about 5mm longer than the Nikon APSC lens, but this has an aperture ring on it, that doesn’t. It is clickable on and off, great for anyone who likes shooting aperture priority like me.The lens is an ideal focal length for the first full frame Nikon lens. This is because it’s just about wide enough for Vlogging even with Dynamic Active stabilisation on. Yes an 18mm would be slightly better for that but I bought this as an all rounder, and it’s wide enough. It is also a superb out and about lens for video and photos. This size does everything- the Vlogging it’s just wide enough, the architecture, inside shots, landscapes, people. Of course a prime to do everything has compromises, but remember on the new Sony cameras you have the astonishing clear image zoom making this lens also zoom to 36mm.The lens is also fast enough. With the flexible ISO on my camera, this can film clear footage in the dark.So why did I go with this over a cheaper non Sony alternative?Well there’s the image quality which is extremely nice. But also Sony lenses work better with Sony in body stabilisation. And given my main priority is top quality footage out and about and travelling in a small package, I have neither the time or inclination to be regularly setting up my gimbal. One of the main reasons I got the ZV E1 was the brilliant stabilisation. So I want the best outcome with that, which means a Sony lens. It’s also very nicely built and I particularly like having an aperture ring this one being either clickable or non clickable. Very nice. Also Sony lenses have more ability for in camera correction, such as focus breathing on this one.So the lens is maybe £100-£200 overpriced like most Sony stuff but really for my use case this lens is an unbeatable first lens and I am wondering if I’ll actually ever need another (although the 16-35 powerzoom would be nice, it’s very expensive!)

Bought this to have a compact lens and it does what I need. I have this paired with an A7 III and it's so much lighter than if I had a Tamron 28-75 G2 attached. I can mostly shoot with just one hand. I also use the APS-C/Super 35 Mode to get a 60mm range.Image quality is great and sharp, just what you'd expect with a G lens. I read some comments where people were saying this is pretty much a GM lens, but I don't have any knowledge of that. The 40mm focal range is so natural and I'm glad I went with it over the 35mm.My main dislike is the lens hood, and I wish it was the more traditional one like the one the 24mm version has.
