5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the feint hearted
The device does what it is supposed to do once you have navigated the QTS software for setting up the volumes. It is only as slow as the slowest drive you install in it, which in my case is unfortunately 167MB/s. Shame the fans are not controlled by QTS like the host but by a three position manual switch on the back of the unit, they are quiet, but not for using in a living area. The positioning of most features are exactly the same as the QNAP TS-87x series of devices. The USB cable supplied appears to be special for the device, you cannot use a cheap cable (sub £12) with the unit. Power consumption is good at 48w when idle and fully loaded with spinning disks.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great product
Eactly what I was after, a plug and play DAS expansion from a trusted brand
5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected
The media could not be loaded. Been waiting to buy this for months. Saw one on offer for £286 & bought it straight away!Would be just as happy if I’d paid full price. So fast when it’s connected to a usb 3.2 10mps connection & the ability to make different raid groups is top Notch.
4.0 out of 5 stars Don’t believe what you read
The unit is good . I have set it up as JBOD device with drives working individually. I highly disappointed that the QNAP software which I wanted to use ( JBOD MANGER ) is not supported anymore for Apple Macs. It states clearly that is compatible. I got to the bottom of it from QNAP support eventually and gave me the reason why , but the product description has not been changed. I have attached a “copy and paste” with reason why. The unit working well but and I went for QNAP for the software for the JBOD. There is other software which is compatibility but only if you are expanding an existing NAS setup.QNAP support:Apologies for this, but the reason the the JBOD manager is not being supported is because it was found to have compatibility issues in the latest mac updates and it was found that the issue was due to the compatibility of a chipset on the TL-D800C.Although we spoke with the chipset manufacturer about it and we have requested several times to support and fix this issue, unfortunately the manufacturer did not fix it.So, we have stopped the support of the JBOD Manager as it was causing issues for the mac users. It is available though for older versions of macOS, if you are using an old version of macOS.In conclusion, the only options your have are:1. Test if you can set up the RAID using the macOS built-in Utility Disk2. If you want to return/replace the DAS and it is purchased under a month, then speak with your reseller to arrange a return/replacement.3, If the purchase date of the DAS has exceeded the month's period then please contact our sales to discuss a return/replacement option with them. Our sales team can be contacted
2.0 out of 5 stars Very short lifespan ! BUT MAYBE NOT !!
After returning this as faulty and writing the below review, I read in the latest (15Nov) firmware release notes, burried quite deep, "Storage & Snapshots could not detect certain expansion enclosure models after firmware update to QTS 5.0.0.1850." I wonder, but I don't know, and QNAP 'ain't sayin' if THIS is one of the 'certain expansion enclosure models' that stopped working due to a firmware fault ?IF IT IS, then I've returned this AND been quite rude about it below unnecessarily. But meanwhile I've bought two QNAP TR-004s. I KNOW they work OK.Having replaced lots of HDDs with SSDs, I have eight high capacity hard drives sitting around, so decided to buy this and install them all, giving me a good few terabytes of space in which to dump (archive) stuff.Set it all up, transferred about 8 terabytes of 'stuff' onto two raid5 volumes - working fine, happy days.Today comes time for a re-boot of the attached NAS (TS253A). After reboot, this D800 can't be seen by NAS. Did usual things - power cycle, change cable, talk nicely to it - nothing. So I moved it to another NAS drive( HS453DX) - cannot be seen ! Not even verbal threats had any effect. My conclusion - D800 failure of some sorts. Total up time - about two and a half weeks.Shame, QNAP is usually brilliant (I have 5 of 'em). But electronics, if they're going to fail, usually do so in the first few weeks.Did I order a replacement D800 ? What, you think I'm crazy...
4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality hardware JBOD enclosure but needs high specification host system.
Good quality hardware JBOD enclosure but needs high specification host system.Has USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s interface which is good if you are employing single disk mode.Using in RAID connected to a Qnap NAS is OK but transfer speeds are limited due to the NAS having to provide all of the software RAID computing power, which impacts heavily on NAS resources.Could be used as a windows system DAS but only employing Storage Spaces or single disk mode.Reverted to using two Qnap TR-004 units with hardware raid built in, which are far more versatile. and despite a slower interface have very good read and write speeds in RAID 5.
2.0 out of 5 stars Very Slow
When I first set this up initial test using a two-way mirror in Windows Storage Spaces was okay. Not as fast as advertised, I got 240MB/s write and around 600MB/s read. However once I'd loaded this up with data with the disks approximately 50% utilised performance dropped to around 40MB/s read and 20MB/s write, which is unacceptable.I will be returning this product.I don't know whether this is a Windows Storage Spaces issue or an issue with the unit, but either way it is unusable.
Works just fine with UNRAID.
This is 1 week review of the TL-D800CDespite all the recommendations of using this enclosure with UNRAID/TrueNAS I decided to try it. Currently running it with UNRAID 7.0.0 Beta2 with ZFS pool configured on the enclosure.Enclosure is rock solid ( so far ), not a single DROP or SCSI Error. It's fully populated with 12TB drives. The QNAP Management Tool will only work with USB 3.2 Gen1 ports it will not load the enclosure data with anything else ( You can't config anything there anyway, just view some info, but that will be possible only on 3.2 Gen1 Port ). The drives will work just fine on 3.2 Gen2 USB ports, i.e. transfers and etc, no issues so far.Cooling: Setting it on Auto from the switch in the back, keeps my drives at around 40c. I set it manually on medium in order to keep them cooler ( this is higher RPM than Auto right now). The 2 Fans provide a lot of cooling.Sleep: There is no way to control if the enclosure sleeps or not via software. If the USB port gets disconnected/powered off, the enclosure will go to sleep!Drives Presentation: All drives are properly presented to the OS, SMART stats are present, Serial Numbers are also present with no issues.
A decent purchase.
Product received as per description and prompt delivery. The product is very good for my intended purpose of use as a jbod unit for my media storage. It just connects with my laptop, desktop PC or with my media player units like a bunch of external hard drives. Satisfied with the product.
Qnap TL-D800C
Cela me convient largement!
