Does the job very well. The trap killed an offending rat within a day and struck it cleanly across the neck. So hopefully an instant pain free death. Then killed a mouse -which I felt a bit guilty about- but at least it proved how sensitive the mechanism is.If you're new to this - bear in mind that rats and mice like to run close to the bottom of a wall, so put the trap here if you can. Put the back of the trap against something so that the creature approaches from the front , otherwise you run the risk of catching its side or leg and leaving it in pain. I create a safe looking dark tunnel out of bricks and plant pots with a paving slab on top. Peanut butter works best, pressed into the food pocket, to get the creature to tug at it a bit.

Got 4 of these this evening. Put my bait on and followed the video to set the first trap. Pulled back the sprung loaded bar but it wouldn't stay in position. The holding catch was too far forward and I couldn't move it back. As the spring is so strong it is a little difficult to move fingers around to adjust moving parts.It took a lot of jiggling and playing to get the bar far enough back into the right position. It wasn't as easy as the suggested video shows. Also, when I got the catch to hold the bar it was only very slightly held in place and wouldn't stay sprung.However, this was probably first time use issues. After being triggered a couple of times (without rodent) it seems as though the catch and bar now align better and the bar is held in place more convincingly.The two that did this initially appear to have now sorted themselves out. Something to note is... I initially put bait (peanut butter) over the plate as well as the cup. I re-watched the video and checked the website. Using just the cup is fine and probably causes the rat to reach further into the danger zone before triggering the mechanism.With a bit of practice all 4 traps now hold in place and now we wait...I would recommend these rat traps.Update - although the traps hold well, my resident rat is nervous of them so far. Happy to feed around them, on the few porridge oats I tempt it with... time will tell!

I bought a pack of four of these traps, hoping to control the rats that are active in my outbuildings. The traps are well made and have a strong spring and kill bar.However, as other reviews have pointed out, they are too light as standard and a rodent activating the trap is more likely to send it spinning from the force of the spring. To stop the traps flipping over when activated, I've screwed them to a piece of wood as suggested by one review.However, even with this modification I have found the traps empty of bait and not triggered. I was wracking my brains as to how this could happen, because the platforms are sensitive enough to activate the trap with the slightest of pressure. Then, while actually observing a rat interact with the trap, I realised why. If a rat steps on the front of the trap where the trigger is, it will activate. However, rats are very intelligent and have quickly figured out to approach the bait from the back of the trap, where they can safely eat the bait without setting it off. And in the even they do trigger the trap, their heads are clear of the kill bar and they get away safely.The only option seems to be to use the black plastic trap boxes that are available as an accessory, which would prevent the rodents from approaching the back of the trap. Either that, or change to a different designed trap that doesn't have this flaw.

The media could not be loaded. Easy to set.Bait cup is not part of trigger mechanism, meaning rodent can eat the bait over the trigger. I smeared peanut butter over the trigger to find it licked clean. After baiting the traps 6 times only once did it trigger, not catching anything. All times they were licked clean.See video for how hard it is to set the trap off.I was unsure of whether I had rats or mice, these traps don’t work with smaller mice, I had much more success with the cheap wooden mouse traps.Would buy a traditional set up trap for rats with the bait actually on the trigger mechanism next time.
