5.0 out of 5 stars 500 years of German history – The Big Picture
Disclaimer: I am a big fan of Germany, and the Germans that I have met have almost all been interesting and friendly people.MacGregor takes you through about 500 years of German history, using a technique that he seems to have made his own: identify objects, whether works of art, literature, or architecture, and weave stories around them.I found it a most enjoyable and engrossing book. Although I’m half English, and half European, and I consider myself reasonably well informed, there were huge areas I had not even realised how ignorant I was!Three things in particular I learnt:1. The relationship with France. I knew that they had fought each other for ever! But I had a huge gap in my knowledge of Napolean. By 1812 he had conquered and occupied all of Germany!2. The importance of guilds in creating the German economic powerhouse of today (notwithstanding the very latest challenges it faces). The closed shop approach to many professions which kept standards high and crucially also maintained prices. They were also regionally based, in contrast to the more centralised structures in the UK, according to MacGregor.3. The way some Germans viewed the differences between the Romans and the Greeks. The Romans were considered by Germans to be violent and lacking in culture. By contrast the Greeks were more peace loving, and cultured, and some Germans like Goethe identified more closely with them. It makes the aberration of the Nazi era even more of a catastrophic deviation from Germany’s historic place in Europe. There are enough stories and anecdotes to entertain you, but also enough broad brushes to give you the Big Picture.
