During the 1970s, the Uzelli record label of Frankfurt, Germany [with office in Istanbul], distributed at electronic stores and corner markets cassettes of psychedelic Andalolu bands, which was popular in Turkey and the Turkish diaspora in Germany. The music, influenced by the novel, exciting Western sounds, did not deal with entheogens, as in the West, since drugs were not part of the life of Turkish youth, but instead took the other common theme of protest social politics, a greater threat. Typically combining traditional folk instruments, as the saz lute, with electric guitars and keyboard, Turkish rock created a fusion that was unknown in San Francisco, New York, and London with rearranged traditional folk songs and poetic originals. Extended saz improvisations against deep funk bass and drums were unique dance pieces. Turkish bands often recorded in Germany with its superior audio engineering. This album is an anthology of nine nearly forgotten groups who issued albums between 1975 and 1984. These were truly underground bands, but particular vocalists and instrumentalists were well known in the Turkish community, sometimes from movies. Writing as world music fan who was immersed in the San Francisco Bay Area cultural revolution of the 1960s–1970s, this music indeed captured the spirit of the times. The singers, men (as Erkin Koray and Ali Ayhan) and women (as Elvan Sevil and Nese Alkan), had powerful and sensitive voices. This music from the past is still good and reminds us of the delight of experimentation and adventurous music.
