This is a much better film than many reviews would suggest. Yes, it is all-action filled, yes, there are graphic scenes and yes, the storyline could be richer, but overall this remains a good film. Washington is his usual menacing, good guy, self. His character originating in the now familiar background of a retired CIA "technician", seeking to lead a quiet life, until stirred into action by witnessesing an assault on a young prostitute. Washington easily carries off this type of role. Throughout the film the viewer remains curious - "just how will he deal with this, or that situation". The prostitutes story - played by the upcoming Chloe Grace Moretz, an actress who despite her youth, can certainly deliver a good line - could have been much better used. The viewer is drawn into her life very briefly. We just begin to get curious and involved in her background and life, expecting to hear and see much more of this character. She is the catalyst which draws Washington out of his quiet life back into "traffic". Despite the importance of her role at this point and the developing and unlikely friendship between her and Washington, she is sidelined far too quickly and film then develops without her. This leaves the viewer wanting "answers". True, the end of the film does try to "catch up" with her character, but really the film should have made much more use of such a talented actress. Nonetheless, this is still very watchable stuff. Some critics have been unfairly damming of the film. I often wonder just what these people actually expect from a film. Little wonder why so many films have so much better viewer reviews than so-called professional critics! This film is fiction. It is not intended to reflect true life characters. It is not a biopic, nor is it factual. It IS entertaining. Forget the sceptics. This is Washington at top level. A very good film which, with just a little more thought about the script, could so easily have been a really great film. Sit back, watch and enjoy!

Marvellous full on action at fast pace that will have you in a spin, excitement from beginning to the end with fantastic acting from all and great storyline leaving you dangling from mid air. The story is about a mysterious man called McCall who only wants a new quiet life and his past forgotten. But this is not going to happen here as a young girl under the influence of the Russian gangsters needs his help. So with his hidden talents classed as the equalizer he gives a hand, even out numbered he wont give in. Now I have had my say now it's your turn to make an chose what you do next, relax to this fabulous show eat some munchies ( not to much as we better think of our figures ). I rated this an A grade plus for the full on action, acting and storyline. So what are you waiting for the curtain is going up. Enjoy!

I was thoroughly entertained by this for the whole two hours and eleven minutes. You don't have to be a genius to keep up with the plot but it is not so bland as to be boring either. There is plenty of action to satisfy the type of individuals that purchase this kind of movie and also some good scene setting periods that are not boring to watch. Obviously with some afterthought most people will realise that certain parts of it are far fetched but while the action takes place you are immersed in it and those details are not apparent at the time, this is a sign that the director has done his job well. As the years pass Denzel becomes less believable as a fast moving athlete but the director has leaned toward the character's experience to offset this. Blu-ray movies are not cheap to buy when first released so one has to be careful what you get but I felt that this disc was worth it's purchase price in entertainment value and have no hesitation in recommending it to fans of action movies.

In reality, we would need hundreds of thousands of men like Mister McCall to clean the streets around the world.Legality doesn't mean much, morality does. The legal system around the globe is morally corrupted and evil is not punished as it should. Criminality gives billions a year to the legal system.The EQUALIZER trilogy is very good but the first film is the better one.

Wow what a film, watched this and was totally blown away, Denzel Washington is phenomenal in this, Mr McCall !! You will know him as and only then will know his true self.Fantastic, action packed and at times gritty, but clearly a winner in my collection.5 stars

Denzel Washington is not to be messed with!

For me, The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington was probably the best all around action movie of the year, just edging out John Wick with Keanu Reeves in it. The reason it beat out John Wick was because this is also a thinking man's movie.By that I mean Denzel Washington gives meaning to his character with just the simple expression of his eyes. He doesn't have to say anything or do anything. You can actually tell he's giving the situation some careful consideration before he moves into action such as when he first takes out Russian thugs in the office in back of the lounge. He opens the door of the office to leave two or three times, trying to make an important decision. It's certainly a tough one to make. Should he kill the men in the room and then deal with the consequences, or just walk away and hope for the best? When the camera focuses on his eyes, you can see him thinking long and hard.This is acting at its very best.There's a reason why Denzel Washington has won two Oscars during his career, and it's still a long ways from being over.In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, who works in a Home Depot-type of store, selling lumber and supplies for construction, or just fixing things around the house. At night he has trouble sleeping and visits the local diner where he has a cup of coffee and reads quietly to himself. It's also the hangout for Teri or is it Elena, played exquisitely by Chloe Grace Moretz, a young prostitute who turns all of her money over to the Russian mafia. She's inadvertently drawn to McCall because he treats her like a fellow human being and encourages her to better herself.A limousine stops in front of them one night when Teri is kind of walking McCall home. Her boss gets out of the car, along with an armed driver, and forces her into the backseat. Even then you can see Denzel thinking, "Should I or shouldn't I?" Teri attempts to resist, but they over power her and drive off. A few days later she ends up in the hospital, badly beaten.That's when Denzel Washington visits the Russians at the back of the lounge, offering them everything he has to buy Teri's freedom. When they refuse, he puts the money back into his pocket and prepares to leave. As he starts to leave the room, he opens and closes the office door a few times, making his famous "no turning back" decision. When he turns around and faces the men, he's calm and relaxed, knowing exactly what he has to do. He even looks at his watch and judges the amount of time it will take to kill them all. Though he's not as fast as in his younger days, McCall still manages to take out everyone in the office without breaking a sweat. As he tells the head mobster afterwards, "You should have taken the money."Of course, this is only the beginning. The head honcho over in Russian sends his top fixer (Teddy as played by Marton Csokas) to solve the problem. Even with him and a hand-picked crew of killers, they're no match for Denzel Washington, especially with the final sequence in a Home Depot.As Denzel Washington's ex-CIA handler tells her husband. "McCall wasn't coming to me for information. He was coming to get permission to kill them." That is when we learn that McCall's late wife died of cancer, and then he staged his own death so could leave the CIA without any problems. He also has a very special relationship with his handler (Susan Plummer) that reminded of the kind a mother and son usually have.The Equalizer did so well at the Box Office that the movie studio that made it, green-lighted the sequel. That usually takes a year or longer, but not this time. We should hopefully have another Equalizer film out in 2016.The regular DVD doesn't have much in the way of extras on it. It certainly has more than John Wick, but what little there is can be watched in ten minutes. I've read that the Blu-ray has more in the way of special features to watch, so I guess I'm going to have to get that one, too. Otherwise, a great action movie!
