Master FX Fire Retardant Spray - 1 Quart (32 oz) - Class 'A' - Treats 100 sq ft - Non-Toxic, Eco-Friendly - For Wood & Absorbent Materials

Description:

  • Non Toxic

  • Master Flame fire retardant in one quart treats approximately 100 square feet, and is perfect for small projects and other limited areas that need to be treated for fire protection. Master Flame is a Class 'A' fire retardant, non-toxic, eco-friendly and easy to use on a variety of materials. Master Flame forms a thermal insulation barrier that prevents dangerous flames from spreading. Master Flame also inhibits the development of toxic hydrocarbon smoke. Applications: Use to treat absorbent materials and surfaces such as drapes, curtains, decorations, uniforms, clothing, wood, pre-construction materials, furnishings, carpeting, packing materials, motor home interiors, holiday decorations, storage boxes, and other materials for added safety against fire. Basically, if it can soak into the object, it will help inhibit flames. Organic materials are best. Plastics, Styrofoam, polystyrenes and similar materials are not well protected with Master Flame. It can also be mixed 50/50 with late

Which is what I use as kindling to start fires. And then I tried to light it with an Aim & Flame. It did not burn. I don't know how it works, and it's a tad pricey, but if you want to make something fireproof, this stuff seems to get the job done. I also mixed it with some primer on another project (which they say you can do). Made the paint thinner, which I expected. But then it started to really thicken up after awhile, like Thompson's waterproofing product. I applied it, and it went on fine, but a little grainy. I assumed from this that it has some active ingredients that really harden surfaces and paint. So I think this was a good buy. If it ever has to stop a fire, it's a great buy.

Sprayed this on the bottom of my utility closet walls in hopes to prevent any fire. Do I need to re-apply at some time intervals??

It does work takes half of a month to harden though

    R.G. · 11 November 2023

The media could not be loaded. You can hear the toughness of it. From soft to hard. It takes alot. Soak the hell out of it. It took almost a month to dry and harden. Turned yellow a little bit. Didn't know if it was actually going to work. I sprayed it every other day for like a week. Then let it sit. When I peeled it back on the lid. It only went through a few layers, not the entire thing. The outside is harden which is fine. The spray does work, some pieces fell or chipped off, and the inside of the furnace will need more soaking and spray, l hit and dragged my finger across it so that the toughness can be heard and seen. No video or pictures prove that it actually works. But it does, I'm using it for a furnace.

Caused mold on wood in 48 hours, hygroscopic

    T.S. · 18 September 2018

Supposedly the product discourages mold growth in addition to being a fire retardant, but I experienced just the opposite. I sprayed it on plywood inside my RV. The plywood was dry before I sprayed, and I figured it would dry out overnight. The weather had been showery, but it was dry inside and humidity was 60-70%. I didn't check on it until 2 days had gone by, and saw black mold/mildew stains on the plywood. I had also sprayed some 2x2s which I left in a shed to dry, and they had started to mold as well. Parts of the wood that I did not spray did not grow mold. It took hours to clean. I sanded away what I could and scrubbed the rest, and I'm not certain that I got it all. There is a piece of plastic next to where I sprayed, and I noticed that it still had tiny beads of moisture from the overspray after 2 days. It's almost like this stuff is hygroscopic, pulling water from the air or at least keeping it from evaporating. Perhaps if I lived in Arizona instead of the rainy northwest this never would have been a problem. Or perhaps even if applied and allowed to dry in an arid environment, it will later condense water when humidity gets high enough? One thing that did appear to work - so far - is some foam insulation that I painted with latex primer cut 50/50 with the fire retardant. This was my original intended application - spraying the wood had been an afterthought. It watered down the paint dramatically as one would expect, making a very thin coat which took a very long time to dry. It was so thin I put on another coat - not for looks but to make sure that the runs in the paint didn't leave areas untreated. If I were to do this again I would use super-thick primer, such as Zinsser Triple-Thick.UPDATE: I had to throw away the foam insulation that I had treated with the 50/50 paint/fire retardant mix. When the humidity was 70%, tiny beads of water slowly appeared on the surface, and my hand came away damp wherever I touched it. At 50% RH this did not happen, and the paint had definitely cured and dried. The fire retardant is definitely hygroscopic.I thought perhaps I could recover the situation by putting a layer of primer over top of the 50/50 mix, but as soon as the primer touched the 50/50 mix it clumped up and did not adhere. I've never seen paint do that, and it's the same primer I'd previously used to mix with the fire retardant - that had caused some minor clumping but nothing like this. I'd also just used that (unmixed) primer on some wood so I know it's good. For me this product was a total disaster, costing me days of rework and replacement building materials. It may be appropriate for areas where the humidity stays well below 70%, but I would never use it here in the pacific northwest. I'd never use it in an RV either, because even if I lived in Arizona the RV might go somewhere that is humid some day.

Poor instructions for mixing with paint

    J.H. · 6 November 2021

I purchased this to paint a fire-retardant layer in a wooden cubby. The bottle says to mix it 50/50 with latex paint. That's all, it's a single sentence. I tried mixing it with the only latex paint I could find in Lowe's, Ace Hardware, and Town and Country supply (which is all labeled as latex-acrylic or water-cleanable acrylic paint), and it became a curdled mess. So I ordered paint from Bolo that was labeled with the word 'latex' only, and tried mixing with that and this stuff basically turned the paint into globs of rubber. It doesn't mix with latex paint at all as far as I can tell.I'm deducting 3 stars because the "instructions" clearly leave out important information, if it's possible at all. I have no idea if it works as an annual spray yet.
