Bloch/ Bruch: Schelomo/ Nidrei [Natalie Clein/ BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra / Ilan Volkov] [Hyperion A67910]

Description:

A dazzling orchestral disc of music from the Jewish tradition of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Bruch’s Kol Nidrei is one of the most well-loved works in the cello repertoire. The descending opening phrase of the cello line is instantly recognizable: a universal, extraordinarily expressive utterance. The main part of the disc comprises the works for cello and orchestra by Ernest Bloch, all part of his ‘Jewish cycle’. The most famous is Schelomo, a work inspired by passages from Ecclesiastes, where the cello, playing a deeply lyric and speaking line of prodigious technical difficulty, can be seen as ‘the incarnation of King Solomon’, as Bloch himself wrote. The other large-scale work for cello and orchestra, Voice in the Wilderness, is of a darker hue. Both works reveal a composer whose works should be firmly in the canon of twentieth-century symphonic writing. The cellist here is Natalie Clein, a celebrated figure in British musical life since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1995 and now a formidable artist, possessed of great musical, technical and intellectual gifts.

Review

"A lovely performance, with Clein bringing out the different colour of each of the to cello's strings and the orchestra effecting most beautifully the transition from sombre to heavenly." --Gramophone, Sept'12

"It's one of the most persuasive performances of this work (Bloch) that I have heard. An outstanding release." --IRR OUTSTANDING --IRR, July/ Aug'12

"Schelomo, Bloch's Rhapsodie Hébraïque, is still the best-known work by the Swiss-born American composer (1880-1959). It appears to have fallen out of fashion, so Natalie Clein's inspired collection of his three cello works on Jewish themes the others the later symphonic poem with cello obbligato, Voice in the Wilderness, and the usually piano-accompanied From Jewish Life, in a charming arrangement for strings and harp by Christopher Palmer with Bruch's Kol Nidrei (1881), is rare and welcome. Her impassioned, sensitive playing finds willing collaborators in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their former principal conductor." ----Guardian, 15/07/12

"Natalie Clein is the cello protagonist in all four works, her range of tonal colour, her animation and her discreet soulfulness proving to be ideal qualities." ------**** Telegraph 27/07/12

"Clein delivers a powerfuly committed performance." --Performance. ****(*) Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine. Sept'12

"Written against a background of growing 20th-century antisemitism, Ernest Bloch's music is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and spirituality. Natalie Clein, in a sleeve note for her new recording of three of his cello works with Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Symphony, says his output "was deeply affected by the early 20th-century yearning for a sense of identity" and expresses "a deep sense of longing and loneliness". She and Volkov give a performance of Schelomo (1916) that is very moving, both in its profound sensuality and in the pervasive sense of transience that gnaws at its vision of worldly glory. They bring the same commitment to From Jewish Life (1924) and Voice in the Wilderness (1936), though their episodic nature leads to an inevitable lessening of intensity. The other knockout is Bruch's Kol Nidrei (1881), in which the solo cello acts as a synagogue cantor to the orchestra's chanted responses. Beautifully done, it brings the disc to a reflective close. Highly recommended. ----***** --Guardian, 09/08/12 Sept'12

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloch and Clein are Superb

First thing you notice from this new CD is the extraordinary playing of Natalie Clein. She offers total commitment, wonderful tone and control in both Bloch and Bruch.I played this, then at the end just had to listen through again. Clein reminds me of Fournier (for muscle) and Rostropovitch (for beauty), drawing out the profound meditative qualities found in the Bloch pieces. She lives and breaths Bloch, a surprisingly little-heard 20th century composer who, although a protestant by upbringing, was mesmerised by traditional Jewish themes, being drawn to the spiritual possibilities found there. The Bruch item Kol Nidrei, which is better known, may well now be the best version available. Ilan Volkov draws great power from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with the recording (a demonstration one)striking perfect balance between cello and players. This release will do much to promote an over-looked composer, and I hope encourage recordings of Bloch's other works, such as the Israel Symphony or his choral works. One really wants to know more about Bloch after encountering Clein and Volkov's quality offering. This CD is one of the most satisfying releases of 2012, and I will be really surprised if it fails to win a pantheon of awards, and fame for Clein.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intensity and lyricism

M.B. · 22 May 2014

Bloch's Schelomo and From Jewish Life , Bruch's Kol Nidrei are all given superb performances by Natalie Clein with the BBC SSO and Ivan Volkov: in the orchestrated From Jewish Life Clein and the string players maintain a hushed intensity. To me Voice in the Wilderness is the disc's weakness, and Clein's persuasive playing cannot compensate for the orchestral music's shortcomings - I find it too episodic and would have been best used as film music. The beautiful lyricism of Kol Nidrei closes the CD in a much more relaxed mood than any of Bloch's pieces.

I mostly liked this album very much - a quality cellist. The only part I disliked was her own cello concerto of which I found only the adagio of interest.

Bloch's cello music

B.A.M. · 12 September 2012

Natalie Clein has been receiving all sorts of fine reviews, and this recording of Ernst Bloch's cello music will add to that compilation! Her playing is not only technically excellent, but she knows how to phrase and how to get at the heart of the music; one notices that rather than her awesome technical expertise. Highly enjoyable.
