Vee Gee brand dial thermometers are an excellent choice for many applications including food and beverage quality control, general lab use, asphalt/concrete testing, and soil and compost testing. The smaller stem and face of the standard unit fits nicely into a shirt pocket or holder while the face and stem of the large unit allow for deeper penetration into the sample. The large faces and long stems of the 3" dial models are perfect for soil and compost testing. Temperature range: -40 to +160 degree F. Subdivision: 2 degree F.

Good instrument, really poor packaging
This thermometer works as expected. The stem is substantial enough to stab into a compost pile. The thermometer responds in a reasonable amount of time. In addition to leaves, my compost pile has small sticks, pieces of cardboard, food scraps, etc., The stem is sturdy enough to withstand pushing through these materials to check the internal temps of the pile. It helps that the end of the stem is pointed.My only complaint concerns the packaging in which it was sent. The first one I received had the stem bent and the thermometer face broken due to being packed in a flimsy cardboard box with no internal support and no protection for the glass face. I returned it to Bolo, and the second one I received was packed the same way. It's stem was slightly bent, but the glass face wasn't cracked, so I reluctantly kept it. Never before have I received such a poorly packed item from Bolo. Hope this is not a trend.
Works as advertised!
I wish I had ordered the orange handle that screws to the back side. Sometimes I have to push pretty hard to get it into my compost and fear bending it.

Great robust thermometer that has helped us follow the progress of a large compost pile over quite a period of time. Its accuracy has allowed us to adjust the mix and moisture with readings at different levels of the pile. The threaded top would allow the addition of a handle. Excellent value for money and swift, well-packaged delivery!
