Excellent film, easy to buy
4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE
well acted
5.0 out of 5 stars Strangely forgotten film-excellent.
Spectacle, dramatic tension, psychological dilemmas, exotic scenery, more spectacle (native girls in traditional undress), credible 18th century dialogue, riveting acting by a cast (now mostly superstars, then just breaking into Hollywood), convincing historical re-creation of a persistently fascinating incident- the Mutiny on the Bounty.Today we live in a homogenised world, but then, you could be one of the first Europeans to encounter welcome and temptation in a very unfamiliar society in a tropical paradise; and after five months .....Don't miss this film-it's two hours of immersion in a different and vanished world. (The picture quality from the DVD was disappointing, or maybe I could tune it in properly).
5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money
A fabulous film with a haunting, mesmeric musical score by Vangelis. The characters are portrayed both sympathetically and with great understanding by the superb cast. Well worth watching.
3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Brando version
It's a well made movie but relates the story in a less serious fashion to the portrayal given by Howard and Brando. It's not unusual to find remakes of classics to fall short of the mark. In the original the acting displayed by Brando and Howard is fantastic and at a level not attainable by Mel Gibson.

Visually beautiful esp Mel Gibson. 😍 Acting is superb and a gripping narrative... true story!
4.0 out of 5 stars The Most Authentic Version
This may not have quite the luscious and luxurious glamour of the famous Marlon Brando / Trevor Howard version but neither does it have Marlon Brando's farcical attempt at an English accent !!!Yes, the Brando/Hollywood version is undoubtedly very glamorous, sumptuous and "big budget." and very enjoyable. It is also a totally false version of events, one that was invented by the mutineers to justify their mutiny when all they really wanted to do was remain in the South Pacific. And Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson (in his youth) are not to be sniffed at. Trevor Howard was a fine actor on a good day but Anthony Hopkins is one of the greatest actors of all time ! My girlfriend at the time could not take her eyes off Mel Gibson in this film and I was totally ignored. Fortunately, his looks faded quite quickly and he became a bit strange. But he gives quite as good portrayal of a very weak Fletcher Christian.I think everybody should own this film as a passably true version of the Bounty legend. Nor do you have to do without visual splendour and they did build their own version of the ship. Indeed, there is hardly an Anthony Hopkins film that is not worth having. It is sadly true that the true version of events is nothing like as dramatic, romantic or cinematic as the Hollywood version but worth having all the same.

A Fool's Bounty
The Bounty is the tragedy of a doomed trip to the South Pacific. In the 1700s writer Charles Nordhoff wrote a trilogy: Men Against The Sea, The Mutiny On the Bounty and also Pitcairn's Island. These three books are more or less encapsulated in this epic voyage shot obviously, on location in the South Pacific, Bora Bora, Sandwich Islands, Tofua, etc. At any event, it was filmed at some place or other that looks tropical. On an expedition to procure breadfruit for His Majesty King George the Third, ie loss of the American Colonies King George, the Madness of King George the Third et al of that fame. The Bounty half circumnavigates the globe and arrives in Fiji or wherever; Polynesia, Samoa? Anyways after the late harvest of the breadfruit brought about by the casual lifestyle as well as the very openly sexual lifestyle and the plentiful availability of sex everywhere and women with their breasts exposed walking around everywhere was more than anyone should be expected to take... The crew mutinies against the rule crazy Captain Bligh and turn against him in a tide of rebellion that sends him and his sympathizers to survive using their wits to finally arrive at a British outpost in the Dutch East Indies.Fletcher Christian and his crew of cutthroat brigands finally arrive at Pitcairn's Island, then an island off of most British whaling maps. They scuttle the ship. The islanders larcenous, murderous and cutthroat pirate ways persist and live on after the mutiny so about 40 years later when an American whaling ship discovers them, Fletcher Christian is by then long murdered or else returned to England under a presumed name. All the original 12 pirates except one or two have been murdered or else died of illness. This movie is stark and crazy precise in its painstaking attention to historical detail. The Bounty set a strange landmark for all films and after The Bounty, standards became higher for all films in general. The pretty young Mel Gibson appears in this film as the doomed and clean shaven Fletcher Christian.Anthony Hopkins makes a memorable performance as the sadistic naval taskmaster William Bligh, a Captain in the British Navy. His performance in this movie would be overshadowed by his future performance as the brilliant Doctor Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs based on the Thomas Harris novel.Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that "The British Navy is rum, sodomy and the lash." Liberal doses of two of the three of that is portrayed in this film. I will leave you to figure out which ones they are.
GREAT TRUE TALE ON THE HIGH SEAS
THE BOUNTYMy brother is huge into history so he is always telling me crazy stories that I have never heard of. So when he first told me about this story I went out and got the book, loved it. Then we started watching the different films about this true story. This version here starred Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson and from what I remember it is the closest to the actual story from all of them. It is about the mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1789.In 1787 William Bligh is given command of the HMS Bounty for a trade mission to Tahiti. He hires his friend Fletcher Christian as his second in command and heads out. After a failed attempt to circumnavigate the globe he gives in and goes the longer eastern route to Tahiti. After arriving they realize that conditions will force them to stay a few months longer which greatly pleases the crew. They love the island life and the native women. So when it is time for them to leave they are of course unhappy, so much so that when they feel Bligh is being to tough n them they decide to commit mutiny. The craziest part is that Bligh's own friend Fletcher is leading the mutiny since he left is pregnant native wife behind. The actual story is crazy and super entertaining for all history buffs out there and the film is really great with Hopkins in particular standing out. Gibson of course is good as is everyone in the film but Hopkins steals the show in my opinion. Director Roger Donaldson did a great job here as he would do later with films like “Cocktail”, “Species” , and “Dante's Peak”. I wish the DVD would have had some bonus features but a special edition Blu-Ray has been released with some commentaries so I will be picking that up. The film is recommended but I really recommend the books on the story more so.
Blu ray review
Twilight Time nailed this blu ray release, and it was high time this superb film finally did get its due. Two separate commentary tracks, both of which are equally insightful, Vangelis' exquisite ethereal score is given an isolated track (in 5.1), and the picture resolution is about as close as you can get to 4K w/o actually being 4K. This film fires on all cylinders, breathtaking cinematography w/o the use of CGI, costume design, a cast to dream of, including a very young Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson, and of course, Anthony Hopkins. This film couldn't have been made at the current asking prices these actors are getting today (Lewis has since retired). Then there's also Academy Award winning screenwriter, Robert Bolt (of Lawrence of Arabia fame). One of Hopkins' best performances.
