Description:
Steenbergs Ajwain - also known as ajowan or carom - is part of Steenbergs range of specialist spices. Ajowan is a relative of parsley and looks similar to parsley when growing. Ajwain seeds resemble celery seeds - small, tear-shaped and light brown. The taste of ajowan seeds is reminiscent of thyme as they have a relatively high level of thymol in them, the active volatile oil, but then they have slightly sharp, peppery notes that are noticeable and a lingering, warm aftertaste. Ajowan complements the flavours of carbohydrates and vegetables well, but the seeds are deceptively strong so use sparingly until you get the hang of them. Ideal for adding a bit of flavour to savoury baking, e.g. cheese biscuits, or lightly dispersed through bread; you should crush them before using them. As an Indian spice, you could try ajowan in parathas, puris, bhajias, savoury pastries, spicy potato dishes and green beans. For some initial pointers, try these recipes for ajwain rice or ajwain paratha or spinach pakora with ajwain seeds or fish baked with ajwain. Steenbergs Ajwain is a specialist spice that Axel Steenberg has had great fun tracking down. Steenbergs is the family run spice (and tea) merchants based in rural North Yorkshire.

This was one of the ingredients, and he was having trouble finding it. He is happy with his purchase. He has used this and thought it was good and would last a while as he only needs a little of it in what he is cooking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tastes like supercharged Thyme!
Good alternative to using Thyme if like me you are allergic to it. However it is very very potent! Even a pinch in a three person stew or curry is totally overpowering. I use a few grains when baking olive focaccia bread.
