Description:
What makes 'Mojo' special is that it was recorded live in the band's legendary rehearsal space, 'The Clubhouse' in Los Angeles. There are no over-dubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what Tom and the Heartbreakers created live at that time. In 2010, Tom Petty said, 'With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. 'Mojo' is where the band lives when it's playing for itself'. As for the songs, 'Mojo' showcases Rock 'n' Roll, to Country, to electric and acoustic Blues, to classic moody ballads. The album features the hit 'I Should Have Known It' and fan favourites such as 'Good Enough', 'First Flash of Freedom', 'Something Good Coming' and 'No Reason to Cry'.

This Is the live sound (apparently the album was recorded live in the studio without overdubs) of TP and the band playing the most sublime sounding blues. It ranges from the opening traditional blues format of Jefferson Jericho Blues and moves next on to First Fllash Of Freedom, a track that the Grateful Dead might have recorded. Other stand outs are the brilliant story telling of The Trip To Pirate's Cove, No reason To Cry and US 41. There are however no weak tracks on the album. The reggae influenced Don't Pull Me Over is fantastic. TP's ghostly vocals coupled with a reggae beat about hoping to avoid being caught by the police whilst carrying drugs. This is an album that flows beautifully from start to finish and the excellent production highlights the superb musicianship including some fantastic performances from all involved especially Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards. Now we just need a european tour please - and soon - and long overdue.
5.0 out of 5 stars Different but great
Having read a lot of the previous reviews, some of which are quite polarised, I had some doubts over whether I would like this album. I needn't have worried. Although the style is a little different to some of Tom's previous work I found I found it a sheer delight. Many of the reviews suggest it needs a few run throughs to fully appreciate it. If that is the case I can't wait... I only received it this morning have just played it the one time! Although there will always be some tracks which are stronger than others I don't feel there are any really weak tracks here. I confess that a lot of my listening is blues influenced so perhaps this is a factor on me liking this offering.A great sound, strong musicianship and it just feels right.I've got several Tom Petty albums already and have always enjoyed his work. I do a lot of long drives down to southwest France and I know "Mojo" will be a constant companion to me.
5.0 out of 5 stars Tom changes direction
This album is a very different sound for Tom Petty and has really shown him in a new light, The lyrics are as strong as anything Tom has written in the past, But this time the sound is bluesy, then a touch of reggae throlwn in too.Very much a stripped down album in many ways with the feel that it was done in pretty much one take with no over dubs added afterwards, It feels like it could of been a album from years ago and that is another strong point of the whole album. You may not fully appreciate the album on its first play, But it will grow on you I promise. Now as other have said can Mr Tom Petty please now tour Europe we need to see you here.
4.0 out of 5 stars I thought I didn't like Blues Rock - But I like this!
"Mojo is a Blues Rock Album and not being a Blues Rock fan I bought this used CD as it was only £2.70, thinking if I didn't like it, I wouldn't have wasted too much money. I had to buy "Mojo" as my Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers collection would not be complete without it. The CD cover is slightly worn but there's nothing wrong with the sound. After playing it I was really surprised at how much I liked the Album. There's 15 tracks on the Album, many are Blues Rock but there are a couple of tracks which are more country sounding, "No Reason To Cry" and "Something Good Coming" and the Reggae beat of "Don't Pull Me Over" all make for a good variety of different musical styles on the Album, which I really appreciate. Other tracks which I really liked are "The Trip To Pirate's Cove" (my favourite on the Album), "First Flash Of Freedom", "High In The Morning" and "Good Enough". This Album is quite a revelation for me, definitely a good purchase and my £2.70 was a very good investment.
5.0 out of 5 stars Head Nodding, Foot Tapping Masterpiece!
This is a head nodding, foot tapping masterpiece from Petty and the lads! This album simply flows.......... its all so natural. Petty seems to be in a mid-tempo groove here. Effortless, its almost like a casual jam, with all musicians in their element. "Running Mans Bible" sets the tone, with its Blues shuffle. Songs like "candy" and "Lovers Touch" have a sleepy groove thats reminiscent of JJ Cale's signature style. However, than there is the harder rock side to this album, "I Should of known it" hollers out like a full-on Led Zeppelin rift which simply demands your attention. This review is based on a couple of listens, but its right up there with Petty's best from first impressions! Enjoy.........

Not so good as Hypnotic Eye but the second best record by Tom Petty. Of course there are many great records by Tom Petty but this defeats almost all of them. I know that this album is not very recommendable by some critics but I don't care. This is just great album.
5.0 out of 5 stars Under rated by BBC reviewer
Please ignore the BBC reviewer on this as it might put you off.Having owned Southern Accents and several other classic Tom Petty cd's for some time I approached this with caution. No need, its a 5 star cd incredible live feel and riffs that will stick in your memory for years to come.Treat yourself you will not be dissapointed.

It has everything, jazz, funk, THE BLUES, rock n' roll and soul. I love the fact that most of the recordings were done in one or two takes, now that's music. It's nice to know that some do it without the technology. I have seen them is show and it's one of my top 5 of all time!!! I think any fan will love this cd!! Don't cheat yourself on just singles buy the whole disc!!
If the Dead and the Allmans had a baby
I'm not a Tom Petty fan. I have a few of the CDs he's put out throughout his career but most of his mid career music I have found to be unoriginal and overly simplistic (Running Down a Dream). But I still like a few songs, particular his music that features minor keys and organs. When he has ventured into blues ("It's Good to Be King"), he's had some interesting outcomes. The MTV years were most definitely his least creative in terms of music with the Heartbreakers (Traveling Wilbouries is a different story... ).So I see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on SNL this Spring and I'm absolutely floored. Where did that guitar come from??? That outrageous Jimmy Page sounding Gibson Les Paul??? And the organs. It sounded like there were ten Hammond B3s playing. Slide guitar, deep organs, contrasting melodies. Oh, and Petty's vocals... pure blues rock and roll. I couldn't believe it. Both songs (Jericho and I Should Have Known It). If I closed my eyes, I could swear I was listening to Jimmy Page on I Should Have Known It. Wow.I downloaded this album, and it is unquestionably the best work he and his band have ever done. Petty has said that they are playing for themselves. Keep doing that... don't play for us anymore! The mood of this album is late 70's stoner. I can't think of another way to describe it. Several songs discuss marijuana and pot growing (Trip to Pirate's Cove, Let Yourself Go, High in the Morning, Don't Pull Me Over... get it?). And there is a slow, bluesy stoner groove to this whole disc. Lots of competing melodies and improvisation. This album reminds me of some of the later work by the Grateful Dead (West LA Fadeaway) and The Allman Brothers (everything). There are a few songs that have the Led Zeppelin/Page sound too. One that has a break that sounds like Heartbreaker revisited. Most songs on this album are excellent. One or two weak or questionable tracks, but this is an album - buy the whole thing. I have found myself listening to it as a playlist for a two months, and I'm still discovering new things.I would love to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performing an unscripted show with ABB or the Dead. They sound like a jam band. They sound pure. They sound sincere.
Impresionante Sonido
Sch..... Pappe!Die Musik ist klasse! Sicher sind hier so einige Songstrukturen von alten Songs neu zusammengestellt - ganz auffällig Tom's "The Trip Of The Pirate's Cove" und Peter Green's "Slabo Day" von seinem Album "In The Skys " - . Aber das hervorragend. Und es gibt noch viel mehr zu entdecken.
