Popcorn Tea (Genmaicha) - Fab Japanese Treat. This might just be one of the most frequently asked questions by those entering the world of green teas – just what is popcorn tea (genmaicha)?! Well, the name may be a tiny bit misleading as it doesn’t actually contain any popcorn. Instead, the tea is blended with toasted rice – which, when popped, looks a little like the more familiar popcorn! Now, blending a tea with a beloved cereal favoured by three little elves might seem a little odd, but it’s actually one of the oldest green tea blends around. As with all great teas, the origins are shrouded in legend. The story of popcorn tea - or genmaicha green tea as it is properly known - is set long ago in the time of Samurai. A lowly peasant named Genmai was working in fields, when some Samurai came through the region. Rushing to serve them, Genmai accidentally dropped some toasted rice kernels into a pot of green tea he was preparing for one of these famed warriors. The outraged Samurai lopped off his head but, without another peasant to brew him up another one, drank the tea anyway. He loved it and was overcome with a little remorse for his actions, finally deciding to name the tea after the poor chap by way of apology - and so Genmai-cha was born (or, literally translated, Genmai’s tea). This traditional green tea has flourished from humble beginnings - Japanese peasants used to mix green tea with toasted rice to make it go further. It is now celebrated in its own right as Genmaicha tea, or Popcorn tea.

Makes a lovely cup of tea. I've tried quite a few Genmaicha teas and this one's the best so far. I just love the aroma of the toasted rice right before you take a sip. The tea temples are great & you get a decent portion of rice in each one.This is not an overpowering tea either so suits a tea rookie like me.

This tea is one of my favourite green teas. I order it again and again. The malty rounded flavour gives you something extra than an ordinary green teaThis works very well for me as I don’t on the whole like green tea, which I find bitter and ‘fishy’ tasting. The idea of toasted rice mixed in with the tea leaves may sound strange, but the rice seems to take away the bitter taste, making the tea really easy to drinkI love this tea - refreshing and tasty. Large leaves with almost no dust. I drink this at any time of day. .I put a large pinch in a mug and I use the leaves twice. The second mug is as good as the first.It is best steeped in filtered water, as with all quality green teas, for the best flavour. Very good for late afternoon or evening drinking, it does not disappoint. This tea is divine & having it loose means I can control its strength..Im very pleased with the tea.

Definitely tastes like popcorn but don’t leave teabag in for too long otherwise you’ll end with a burnt popcorn taste and rather bitter. Odd one but great for movie nights instead of hot chocolate.

I've been purchasing teapigs teas for 2 years, and I wouldn't buy anything else.I love starting my day with a green tea, instead of a coffee now, as a healthier option.The smell of this unique green tea is absolutely phenomenal. I love the little 'popcorns' mixed with the green tea.It is a little pricy but I am sticking to this brand as I like their mission and goals

Called popcorn but has no popcorn flavour, appears to just be a name that has no correlation to the flavour. The actual flavour is burnt rice, which is about as flavourful as you'd imagine, which is to say it isn't. It tastes like slightly off water.

Subtle taste of popcorn
I waited for this tea to go on a good sale because I thought it was somewhat pricey.Glad I tried it!It does have a small taste of popcorn if you are not eating food at the same time you drink this.Also a supporter of drinking green tea for health purposes.Good gift for that tea drinker that has everything already and is hard to buy for.

I didn't know what to expect regarding the flavor, but expected more of the nutty taste of popcorn. The taste was slight. Mostly colored water. Would not buy again.
