Our house was built in the 60’s and some of the plumbing might still be original. I’ve replaced as much of the CH pipework as practicable and drained the system more times than I care to remember.Every time I open the draincocks the water appears crystal clear, yet when I replace pipework or a rad there is oxidised gunge in there.I decided to fill up and add some system cleaner and an Adey magnaclean and run it for a month or two.Drained it out and some dirt came out but not masses. It certainly isnt a silver bullet.I refilled and added this Everbuild Inhibitor which I added through the magnaclean filter. If you don’t have one of them then you can put it in via the header tank if you have one in the loft, or via a radiator vent valve, via a funnel and a small piece of garden hose. I’d recommend a towel rail if you have one as they are generally higher than all other radiators and will drain first when you open the drain cock.I will have to add another again soon as I drained down to move a radiator and replace some god awful pipework that had more elbows than a covent garden bar on friday night.The Magnaclean filter is definitely pulling the black ooze out and this inhibitor stuff is keeping things quiet. After spending about 400 quid servicing the boiler and fitting a new diverter valve and pump, I’ll certainly take another punt on this stuff keeping it ticking over nicely.

It is suitable for systems with up to 10 radiators, although my setup includes more. With some radiators switched off and varying in size, the initial bottle seemed sufficient. I decided to purchase a second bottle to ensure continued protection, as it can be added to the header tank to replenish the system over time. The inhibitor is compatible with microbore systems, plastic or fibreglass header tanks, and all common heating metals, including aluminium. It contains no mineral oil, making it suitable for both new installations and extensions to existing systems. It was easy to use and represents good value. ✔️

The review asks me to rate Ease of Use (you just tip it in the header tank so hardly rocket science) and Easy to Install (tip it in the tank!).All i can say is that when i went to a friends house who had just had their boiler repaired I spotted a bottle of this and when i asked, they said the engineer had used it. So looks like i picked a product used by professionals.Difficult to gage if it is working, i will empty the header tank again in a while and top up with the remainder of the bottle just to be on the safe side.
