RE-PRESS: CD ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 2008 .

  • Norman Smith… Hurricane Smith or Normal to John Lennon. Producer and Engineer to both the Beatles and Pink Floyd. A legend in the industry and a performer of a number of hits in his own right. ‘Don’t Let it Die’ was a massive hit and won him an Ivor Novello award, this after The Beatles may or may not have turned it down because it was a little too complicated for Ringo to sing! 4.0 out of 5 stars A break from the 'Norm'

M.C. · 13 September 2011

This is the man who engineered on a lot of Beatles singles. Norman 'Hurricane' Smith (named so at the speed he used to get the work done)decided to write some songs and record them himself and this s a collection of his work as a writer. "Dont let it die" (his biggest hit)always makes me cry as he talks about the way we treat the Animal Kingdom and the planet. That was back in the early 70s so there was concern even then. It is collection of typical 70s pop songs, in the vein of Mr O`'Sullivan( listen to "Auntie Vi's" the first track).Even does one of his numbers,"Oh babe what would you say". Great Cd for travelling in the car with the sun in the sky. This is a feel good Album Not bad for a man ( who was in his 80s when he passed)who started his pop career late!! Recommended!!

C. · 21 May 2014

I love this song but not so much this version of it.The story goes that Norman 'Hurricane' Smith wrote this song for John Lennon to sing but Lennon though he loved it said that Norman should sing it.The song has a lovely, lilting melody and the ecologically aware lyrics a plaintive vocal cry on the original version but this actual version was recorded much more recently. It's still a great song but it sounds more like a demo here.

BEST OF HURRICANE SMITH

b.j. · 26 February 2021

I've always loved the songs of Hurricane Smith. This is a great CD. Maybe not to everyone's taste but the music from this era has always been enjoyable to me.Norman ( Hurricane ) Smith was a song writer, singer, producer and music engineer who worked with the Beatles and Pink Floyd over his career.

Better than I imagined

T.A.H. · 17 February 2014

Always loved his Oh, Babe, What Would You Say? from the late sixties. Found this gem and bought it for that song. Was very surprised at how great a listen this album is - the music is very listenable and I'm glad to have it. Hurricane Smith's voice is unique and I love this album.

Not For Everybody

S.R. · 28 May 2011

Either you like Hurricane Smith or you don't. He's a really different breed. He grew up in Britain in the late '30's and 40's and it shows in this music, which owes more to pre-WW2 British pop music than anything since. His voice is scratchy, the arrangements are orchestral, and many of the songs are nostalgic for a way of life that disappeared many decades ago. But that's what I like about him. He traveled his own road, making music that nobody else was remotely interested in doing, and it came out pretty well. I don't listen to it that often, but when I do, I always have a smile.
