I love Dominic Dunne’s books, especially his novels which are an intriguing mix of reality and fantasy. I enjoy the way some of his characters overlap into different books

4.0 out of 5 stars American Class

Life among the American super-rich, skilfully portrayed and with convincing characters and believable plot lines. A good read which has opened up a new reading seam for me to mine. Dominic Dunne seems to have an unrivalled knowledge of this section of American society.

Brilliant book. Can't recommend enough. Perfect take down of the snobbishness and ridiculous airs of those that think they're better than everyone else.

3.0 out of 5 stars People Like Us

R. · 18 August 2012

The lives of the High Society rich in New York are shaken by the arrival of a nouveau riche husband and wife determined to fit in. The wife however, has a secret which she shares with a famous author struggling to deal with the murder of his daughter, some years earlier.A pacy read, Dunne obviously knows his stuff, the people, the attitude. The plot is also good, the AIDS strand could be really cliched but is nicely underplayed. A little dry in places and overall it feels like the book could have done with a good polish. It's a little episodic in places and it doesn't always hang together. However, the characters are well drawn and it brings to life a time when old money met with new money. A good read, not particularly trashy, but not too worthy. This was also made into a mini-series starring Ben Gazzara, Connie Selleca from tv's 'Hotel' and Jean Simmons.

Consistently excellent

H. · 6 May 2003

Dominick Dunne's many books are consistently excellent, and PEOPLE LIKE US is no exception to this rule.Like virtually all of his novels, PEOPLE LIKE US was inspired by real people and real events. As always, Dunne provides an insider's view of the life of the rich and famous. Here, Dunne details the conflict between the old society money and the newly minted billionaires who arrived in Manhattan at the end of the financially over-heated 1980's.It's fun, in hindsight, to figure out on whom he based some of his characters. Any reader who remembers those days will say, "Oh, that's Mr. T...and that's Mrs. G. And that restaurant is M, and the handsome newscaster, the interior designer, etc., must be...."As ever, Dunne's writing is so facile that the pages just fly. Quite a story he weaves, too, with lots of memories of a fascinating period of modern history.

Disappointed

Having absolutely loved S Season in Purgatory I wanted to read another Dunne. Looked for this book for years in second hand shops etc. Finally gave up and got it on Bolo.Didn’t enjoy it at all. Unsympathetic characters, endless dull descriptions of shallow people ( ok , that is the point of the book ). End result was not finishing it.Go for A Season in purgatory instead.

A Tale of Power & Greed

R. · 23 February 2022

With such a large cast of characters, I was amazed at how well I grew to know them. Mr. Dunne is the arbiter of all thing’s high society. You and I will probably never mingle among the super-wealthy, but that doesn’t mean we don’t share their problems. Money doesn’t isolate us from woe; it just means their surroundings are more bearable than ours. People Like Us is a story of greed, but it’s also a story of family and what that means. Some characters will rise and fall, and others will continue upon their merry ways, never realizing their shortcomings. One thing is for sure; you won’t be able to stop reading about this tale of jealousy, murder, a failed criminal justice system that puts the criminal above the victim, and the power of money and position—a rollicking good read.

A fun look into the lives of the wealthy

At the start this book might go slow for the reader because of all the people you’re introduced to. Just bear with it and you’ll end up reading a really delightful novel. Dominick Dunne knew high society well.
