David GILMOUR About Face CD
Reviews:
5.0 out of 5 stars About Face, by David Gilmour, the Pink Floyd legend.
A very good solo album by the Pink Floyd legend.Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist with The Who wrote the lyrics for the tracks Love on the air and All lovers are deranged. My favourites are - Blue Light, Until we sleep, Out of the blue, Near the end and You know I'm right. The Kick Horns and orchestral arrangements work really well on the album.
5.0 out of 5 stars A careful journey ...
The package arrived in excellent condition due to careful wrapping that protected from the bump and grind of a long journey to Canada .... just enjoying the fruits of that journey on my stereo ... cheers ...
4.0 out of 5 stars Let's face it - it's all about David Gilmour.
About face: the second solo album by David Gilmour - originally released in March 1984; sees,by and large a change of musical direction from the Pink Floyd icon.It is,on the whole,an experimental album, where David doesn't seem afraid to take risks with different musical styles.Opening track: Until we sleep - is a disappointing start, and suffers from what has been known as "thin eighties production" sound quality.output improves somewhat with: Murder - heavy sounding dark themed. The Who's Pete Townsend is co-credited with writing two songs (with DG) - on: Love on the air and All lovers are deranged.both interesting inclusions.Blue light was released as a single at the same time as the release of About face; and is the most commercially sounding track on the album - The guitar intro has a touch of: Run like hell, from The Wall album, and is the only snippet on About face that is anything like pink floyd.David G seems in a very innovative mindset. The instrumental: Let's get metaphysical - is atmospheric and sees some superb guitar riffs from DG - only expected.closing track - The appropriately titled: Near the end; is a meloncholic but fitting end to the album.Initally,About face sounds rather fragmented and inconsistent.but give it a few listens and you'll find each song (most anyway) stand up on their own merit.A fine cast of musicians contribute to the album: members of David's core band include; Jeff Porcaro (Toto) on drums and pino palladino (Bass guitar) - listen to his incredible bass line on track 2: Murder - and Ian Kewley: keyboards etc (both members of The Royal family - Paul Young's backing group).Along with other notable musicians: Steve Winwood,Jon Lord,Anne Dudley and the ubiquitous - Ray Cooper on percussion - this augments the celebrated contributors.Brass contributors: The kick horns, are in there,so is the legendary (much missed) Michael Kamen conducting The National Philharmonic orchestra. This 2006 re-mastered (not the best I've ever heard),re-issue,comes complete with inner sleeve booklet containing; full lyrics, black & white photos, musicians' and re-issue credits, and is well presented.Generally a good, above average album - but I prefer David's follow up solo Album: On an island - released a mere (sic) 22 years later in 2006.N.B. both co-produced by Bob Ezrin - by the way.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd and after I had bought all those albums I was left wanting more, so I started listening to some of David Gilmour’s solo work and bought his three albums. If your not sure whether to pick this up all I can say is the tracks 'Murder' and 'Near The End' make it well worth it. I have only listened to the entire album a couple of times, some of the tracks may sound a little dated to some but I quite liked them. I keep returning to those two tracks I mentioned though, they are absolutely brilliant and up there with the very best Gilmour/floyd songs in my opinion.9 July 2017I've updated my review and bumped it up a star as i have grown to really love this album, i have listened to it so many times now. The track 'You Know I'm Right' is another stand out, the solo towards the end is fast becoming one of my favourites. The ninth track 'Lets Get Metaphysical' is an instrumental featuring The National Philharmonic Orchestra, it reminds me of Ennio Morricone every time I hear it.I highly recommend this album.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great solo effort from Mr. Gilmour even if the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired
I Bought the vinyl in March 1984 and found the sound quality rather on the thin side.Sorry to say this Parlophone CD release (9463708422) suffers from the same thin delicate sound, the sound is ok, not fantastic, until things speed up a bit then you get a CD sound quality akin to a stylus full of fluff.I love Mr. Gilmour's work, the Pink Floyd albums on a whole were recorded to perfection, sorry Mr. Gilmour this album just is not.I wish artists would come up with a way of 'consistancy' in their recorded work.It still gets 5* as the music is superb even if it has not been recorded 'and or' mastered properly.
5.0 out of 5 stars A fab album
Really love this album its my 3rd copy. Lots of others have reviewed the songs so I shall not. I'll just say there are no tracks that are fillers in my opinion and its a very mixed and varied sound as only David Gilmour could do. Its not Pink Floyd its much better actually with ballsy tracks and more gentle sounds all intermingled. Its a must have for me and for anyone who loves the Gilmour sound and the Gilmour input of Floyd you will not be disappointed. Check it out.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good music.
Brilliant music, lacks in sound quality. I was really disappointed with this cd as I bought this and David's first album together. The first albums sound quality was a lot better than this. So only a 3* for this unfortunately.
5.0 out of 5 stars It’s David Gilmour!
Of its time, but essential.
