Description:

During the Depression era of the 1930s and on into the 50's, street musicians were a commonplace of Black American life. In rural areas entertainers tended to follow a path determined by the seasons - they arranged to be around just as the crops came in and work and money became abundant. In the cities they would also chase the dollar, playing in open-air markets, outside taverns, anywhere they could find a receptive and generous audience. Many of these artists restricted their repertoires to the religious material that found a wide audience in days when the hope of heaven was all that sustained many. These singers, most of whom accompanied themselves on the guitar, usually had any combination of three reasons for being on the corner singing for pennies: they might be blind, with no other way of scraping a living; they might be escaping (or tired of seeking) more arduous work; they might be true evangelists on a God-given mission. The 101 tracks on this 4CD set feature Blind Rev Gary Davis, Blind Joe Amos, Blind Joe Taggart, Blind Willie Davis, Blind Gussie Nesbit, Brother Willie Eason, Sister Matthews, Sister O M Terrell, Mother McCollum, Rev Charles White, Two Gospel Keys, Elizabeth Phillips, Eddie Head & His Family, Henry Green and Bull City Red.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential history.

There have been some rather scathing reviews about this 4 CD set but please, take it for what it is, a nice little history of gospel singing and the influences it had on other performers, bare this in mind and you will enjoy it.

I have only had a few spins of this set but already i would say this i another superb JSP set. Some of the music is very samey but when the quality is this high who cares. The sound quality on the wonderful nd incredible intense Blind Gary Davis recordings is as good as i've heard and this is a great companion to volume 1. I'll review it in some depth in the future, but if you like old pre war blues or gospel i can't see how you could fail to love this.

Know What Your Buying

If your buying this set for the Rev. Gary Davis tunes, STOP, he is the selling point for the lesser known artists. You need to have a big name to sell the lesser known. That's pure and simple marketing.Though the Rev. Gary Davis tracks are some of his greats, I would recommend buying his Harlem Street Singer album instead or one of his "complete" albums if he's why your buying this collection. You should buy these recordings because you can't find many of these aritsts anywhere else or at least not on one compilation. Most blues/gospel/old time, etc., players, even the famous ones, knew only one or two chord progressions and made up multiple songs around those progressions. John Lee Hooker made a career out of a 1-2 chord boogies. Charley Patten recorded several numbers around his "G Down the Staff". Likewise for Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell, John Hurt, etc.,etc.,etc., In fact, not much has changed in that regard. So, it's no surprise that these artists did the same thing. Yes, Blind Joe Taggart uses the same guitar part for every song, but that doensn't mean they aren't worth listening to. But you should already be a bit familiar with these artists or at least familiar with the genre before purchasing. If your an electric gospel/blues fan looking to dig into acoustic gospel/blues this collection is not for you. If your a fan of acoustic gospel/blues than you already know what your in for and should be farely pleased.
