Although Mozart wrote no fewer than 34 sonatas for violin and keyboard, he didn't compose even one for cello. Alexander Kniazev's remarable transcriptions of three of the violin sonatas for cello and piano go some way to remedying that deficiency. They transform the works, too: cello brings out the rich, proto-Romantic sonorities implicit in the music.

These are excellent recordings of three of the violin sonatas transposed for the cello by the performer. One of the many tragedies of Mozart's short life is he never managed to compose much for the cello. A great pity because the deeper and darker tones of the instrument are perfect for the always present ambivilence and tinge of sadness in Mozart's music, even when he appears at his sunniest! I see from the sleeve notes this disc is labelled volume one, lets hope there are more to follow from Mr Kniazev as his playing is terrific.

ヴァイオリンもチェロも超えて
もともとクニャーゼフの演奏はディスクも実演も含め幾度となく聴いてきました。中でも、チャイコフスキー の三重奏とバッハの無伴奏は、一生の宝物となる演奏だと思っています。こちらのモーツァルトのヴァイオリンソナタについての予備知識もほとんどなく、クニャーゼフとモーツァルトも合うとは思っていなかったので、一つ参考までに聴いてみようかなくらいのつもりで購入しました。が、最初に収められているK.379の、出だしのピアノに言葉を失ないました。こんなに美しい、心打たれるモーツァルトに出会ったのは初めてです。ギターやハープかき鳴らすような和音、木管の調べのようなメロディ、オルガンや金管のコラールのような深い響き。音色の多彩さに、一旦CDをとめてしまったほどです。気を取り直してチェロを待ち構えていると、カデンツァのような、小節を感じさせぬ自由な歌い方にびっくりさせられます。２楽章の変奏曲も、最初の音から消えるように終わるところまで、張り詰めた緊張感と安らぎが同居しています。特に、第一変奏のピアノソロ。チェロのピッチカートを伴奏に歌うピアノのフレーズの最後の弱音。この演奏でモーツァルトのｋ.379が大好きになり多くの演奏を改めて聴き直しましたが、この２人ほど緊密な演奏はありませんでした。よく言われている話ではありますが、ヴァイオリン付き（このディスクの場合、チェロ付き）のピアノソナタという名称はその通りだと思えるくらい、弦楽器と鍵盤楽器が対等に語り合っています。この演奏者２人は、この曲を全く違う次元に連れていってます。この演奏は、深い祈りの曲です。ところでディスクには他の曲も収められています。どれも素晴らしい演奏なのです。ですが、自分にとっては、もうk.379だけで充分です。それほど感動しました。ヴァイオリンであるかチェロであるか、この演奏の前ではあまり意味をなさないと思います。また１つ、人生の宝物にしたい音楽が増えました。
ＫＶ379のピアノ演奏は圧巻です。
ヴァイオリンソナタをチェロソナタに編曲ということ自体珍しいのですが、チェリストの演奏もさながらピアノの伴奏がすばらしいです。KV379のピアノ演奏は伴奏の域を超えています。この演奏を越える演奏は現れないであろうと思われるほど完成度が高いものになってます。

Brilliantly performed by the world's two top artists, perfect, even, recording, superb sound.I'd give it 11 out of 10.And of course the works are a delight to listen to, some of the best that Mozart ever wrote.
Great performances, terrible editing
Musically speaking, this is a wonderful CD. Alexander Kniazev on cello and Edouard Oganessian on piano play with great expression and sensitivity. Their performance is at least 4 stars, possibly 5. The problem is the editing. Some tracks don't end where the movement ends, they end after playing the beginning of the next movement. The next track picks up where the last one dropped off, but it's not the actual beginning of the movement. Track 6, which is the Andante of Sonata in F Major, ends very abruptly. Instead of picking back up where it left off on the next track, as other movements did, the editors just start the Rondeau very abruptly. Toccata Classics should be embarrassed. They smudged and muffed up a very good performance.
