Five substantial pieces are recorded here, dating from different stages of the composers career and demonstrating both the programmatic elements of his writing and his Impressionistic side. Blochs deep affinity for string instruments and the piano is also given ample expression in these works, all of which deserve a permanent place in the chamber music repertoire. They are given performances of great vitality and sensitivity by the Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane.

Worth having for the first Piano Quintet alone but the rest is no slouch either. Superbly played and recorded, this is music that grips you from the first note. If I had list of recordings to die for, this would be one of the obvious choices.

This is a very enjoyable disc. Of course it's not fashionable to approve of music written since 1920 unless it sounds gritty and uncompromising, but this is directly appealing. It's a pity to lose sight of that basic reality that it should be a fundamental requirement of music that it should at some level please the ears.Bloch does this handsomely. His two piano quintets, both elegantly performed here, are in some contrast - the first is a major piece from early maturity, the second is a late work of slighter design and lighter invention. But you will surely draw much pleasure from the wide range of invention and the sure touch of craftsmanship which is in evidence throughout. Like many Swiss artists, Bloch is uncertain where his true creative roots lie - there are touches of Brahmsian weight interspersed with hints of skittering impressionism. But across the piece the flow carries plenty of enthusiasm, and the works (especially the first quintet) are played with ample, real conviction.I also enjoyed the smaller scale chamber pieces here. The recording is very happily balanced. Warmly recommended as long as you are happy at the idea of exploring music which could well have been written twenty or thirty years earlier.
