5.0 out of 5 stars Great mono recordings of two great works!
This is a wonderful CD containing Brahms Alto Rhapsody, sung by Kathleen Ferrier with the London Phil and Clemens Krauss[recd 1947] and Mahlers Das Lied von der Erde with Ferrier and Julius Patzak, with the Vienna Phil and Bruno Walter[recd1952].The mono sound is very good, particularly for the singers. The orchestral sound is a little thin, but somehow for me it adds to the atmosphere of the music and the works themselves. The singing by Ferrier is heartfelt and Patzak's contribution has been under-rated,I believe. This is indeed music from another time and place. The whole sound world is far removed from the modern 21st Century world. It takes us back through the evocative mono sound world to Brahms and Mahler themselves.Yet the feeling in the music, the love, the poetry, the hope and the resignation are so human that it rings true at any time and place. This is already a personal favourite recording and I am sure it will be for you if you buy it.And I must say the Brahm's work is crucial to the enjoyment of this CD.Beautifully sung by Ferrier,it is in no way inferior to Das Lied. The two works complement each other superbly and I wouldn't be without it.In conclusion,it is very easy to recommend this very special recording.
5.0 out of 5 stars History
The recording was made one year before I was born in 1948 When you listen to the Brahms Alto Rhapsody you are listening to something so fresh and of "now" in feeling; you feel as though you are in the concert hall listening to it live
5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
Very good remastering of these wonderful pieces of music and Kathleen Ferrier's voice.
5.0 out of 5 stars Irreplecable
Same comment as before : I am more than ever convinced that these recordings will still be cherished in the 22th century
5.0 out of 5 stars beyond comparison
Whatever other recordings of these great works I have (and that's lots, I'm afraid), I can't live without these.I will not write at length as these recordings have been praised many times before, but I feel the performance of the Alto Rhapsody deserves a special mention. True, it is slow by comparison with many others, but in its sheer intensity it seems matchless - even in the first 2-3 minutes it takes you deep "into the zone". Credit here to the LPO, and to conductor Clemens Krauss, for wonderful pianissimo and deft accompaniment for Ferrier's voice. It's remarkable to think of one of Germany's most distinguished conductors making this recording with a great British singer and orchestra in bomb-battered London in 1946!These recordings are indispensable for me. The sound is clearly of its era but entirely fit for purpose. My only regret is that there is no extended pause between track 1 (Alto Rhapsody) and track 2 (first song in the Mahler cycle) - Das Lied Von Der Erde breaks in tumultuously after a gap of only a second or so from the rapt end of the Brahms, so be warned. On artistic grounds, however, this disc can only get five stars.
