Amazon.co.uk Review

Stripped to the bare essentials, and the antithesis of Pink Floyd's epic live performances, David Gilmour in Concert is a low-key, classy affair. Using footage from 2001's Meltdown Concert and his Royal Festival Hall show in 2002, Gilmour performs a mix of solo compositions and Floyd classics. Opening with a lengthy acoustic version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", the show gradually gathers momentum as "Fat Old Sun" and "High Hopes" are tackled. Other legends such as Richard Wright and Bob Geldof make guest appearances, with Geldof providing complementary vocals for the second live version of "Comfortably Numb" featured. "Shine On" is also reprised mid-way, this time with added backing band, choir and electric guitar. Resembling more a classical than a rock concert, the audience attentively soak up Gilmour's performance, politely clapping at the right moments and never doing anything as undignified as standing up (although there are the occasional cat-calls). It's an excellent live recording that should appeal to all Gilmour's fans.

On the DVD: David Gilmour in Concert on disc enhances the exclusivity and quality of the performances with crisp 5.1 surround (an ordinary stereo soundtrack is also available) and an anamorphically enhanced picture. --John Galilee

5.0 out of 5 stars David Gilmour in Concert - A Superb Record on DVD

The DVD version, in 5:1 Dolby Digital Stereo and 16:9 anamorphic superbly complements Gilmour’s traditionally high production values. The camerawork and film quality give the viewer a more intimate experience of the performance than would be afforded even in a front row seat, with excellent sound, mixing and balancing, capturing every nuance of the range of instruments and voices Gilmour assembled for this rare event.Like many Floyd fans, old (in my case!) and new, it is a real treat to see how Gilmour’s set, the nearest thing to a “Pink Floyd Unplugged” we will perhaps ever see, reworks Floyd favourites through captivating and refreshing arrangements: Shine On You Crazy Diamond opens the show with a subtle build-up on acoustic guitar, and is joined with superb playing from original Floyd sax man, Dick Parry. Fresh arrangements of High Hopes, Great Day For Freedom, Wish You Were Here, Fat Old Sun are other highlights from the Pink Floyd canon, all featuring sterling vocal and instrumental work, not just from one of rock’s best guitarists, but from a splendid ensemble of players, including Michael Kamen on piano and Chucho Merchan on double bass. The DVD contains two versions of Comfortably Numb, with singers Robert Wyatt and Bob Geldof both taking the Roger Waters ‘Doctor’ role.Je Crois Entendre Encore from Bizet’s Pearl Fishers and Hushabye Mountain (from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!) show just how powerful and moving David Gilmour’s singing is. His voice has stood the test of time, and these recordings beautifully capture his range and technique.Other highlights are not to be missed: The dramatic build up to the second instalment of Shine On is very powerful indeed, with Gilmour’s bottleneck slide guitar solo. Two Syd Barrett solo numbers (Terrapin and Dominoes) make a mellow and hypnotic addition to the set. Floyd keyboard player/singer Rick Wright also performs Breakthrough from his Broken China album, a beautiful and chilling number, backed by Gilmour’s remarkable choir. The DVD version also features footage of rehearsals, lyrics, miscellaneous filmed performances, and close-ups of guitar fingerings for budding Gilmours and students of music. This selection is really great value.I can wholly recommend this excellent DVD. Every Pink Floyd fan should have this, as should anyone interested in contemporary music. It records the recent work of one of rock’s most noted guitarists, singers and writers. With the layers of trademarked Floydian technology peeled away, this is a chance to see that excellent song writing and musicianship can still deliver its hefty punch.

5.0 out of 5 stars David Gilmour still has that magic touch

D.S. · 25 October 2002

This DVD is a recording of the Meltdown concert in 2001 with three additional tracks from the concert in 2002 (that I was lucky enough to attend). Most of the music is played accoustically, and played very effectively. There are a few magic moments where David Gilmour picks up an electric guitar and understandably the audience goes wild. There is a mix of old and new Pink Floyd, some Syd Barrett and a couple of other well chosen tracks that really make this a compelling DVD to enjoy.Gilmour's singing reaches some real heights, particularly on the Bizet track 'Je crois entendre encore'. Both parts of 'Shine on you crazy diamond' are movingly played. The first part is a complex accoustic piece, on the second he really wails. I really enjoyed the two Syd Barrett pieces, 'Terrapin' and 'Dominoes'. It was good to see Richard Wright turning up to play a couple of pieces, the track 'Breakthrough' from his solo album was well executed. Old favourites 'Fat old sun' and 'Wish you were here' were fresh and full of life. Quite why we needed two versions of 'Comfortably numb' is a mystery, surely this piece of music exists in more versions than any other! Both are good, though, the guitar solos are excellent. There is one new Gilmour composition 'Smile', an easy and mellow number. All of the sixteen tracks from the two concerts are top notch. The DVD extras are pretty good. He plays a great blues piece 'I put a spell on you' with Jools Holland and Mica Paris and sings a Shakespeare sonnet really well. Additionally there are some home videos of rehersals, close ups of his guitar solos and the lyrics to the songs. This DVD shows that David Gilmour is not too old to play or sing with skill and style, it would be great if he could produce at least one more CD of original material before he finally retires.

I am a huge fan of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour in particular. This 2002 DVD was one I didn't get round to purchasing previously. However, when I saw this on Bolo for less than ~£4 (used but VGC), I didn't hesitate to buy it - and I am so pleased I did. You get an excellent assortment of songs including a number of Pink Floyd classics. It's more of a cosy "acoustic" event rather than a rock concert. Refreshingly different - I greatly enjoyed it.If you are a fan of David Gilmour, don't hesitate to buy this DVD (new or used)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Shining...

". · 25 October 2002

The DVD comprises footage from two sets of performances (Summer 2001 & January 2002) from the Royal Festival Hall. A bit like MTV Unplugged setup in nature, although there is still of course Electric Guitars for a few songs.A revamped version of Shine On You Crazy diamond opens in acoustic style. Old classics (Fat Old Sun, Dominoes and more) are performed brilliantly as are non-pink floyd tracks from Bizet and rather surreally Chitty Chitty bang bang. All are performed superbly with stunning backing from Cello, Choir, Double Bass and Piano affirming that along with being excellent songs you are watching true musicians in action. This is a brilliant record of the nights, capturing the atmosphere well and superbly laid sound tracks. The concert closes with an extended version of Breakthrough (with a guest appearance from Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright - who wrote the song on his album Broken China)which I was humming for weeks after hearing for the first time at the concert Live and then Comfortably Numb with Bob Geldof taking Roger Waters place, one of the best guest performances I personally have seen. The extras include footage of rehersals for the show and a little indulgently Gilmour singing Sonnett 18.If you like Pink Floyd or David Gilmour, you'll love this.If only he'd release it on CD for me to have in the car...
