CD: Kronos Quartet,Nuevo
Amazon.co.uk
To say that the Kronos Quartets Nuevo is the ensembles most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout.
A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel is covered; theres a chamber arrangement of Revueltas sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronoss interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (check out "El Llorar", with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas).
But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable.Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project.--Jason Verlinde

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, bright, refreshing and technically brilliant
To anyone who tells me that classical music is an "antique" medium, I show them the Kronos Quartet. I disagree slightly with yer man's other review here who suggests tghat this is a novelty record - of course it's not! it's brimming with blistering summer, salty fire and sharp lime spirits, fast paced stomping and life. Life, life it's so full of it it's exploding like good humoured fireworks.I've never had such good fun listening to a quartet, and can you belive my viola playing mother bought this for me for my birthday. She really must have been thinking it was someone else! This CD is a real joy. Buy it, and listen to it on a blistering summer's day.
5.0 out of 5 stars South of the Border
The Kronos Quartet have long been on my 'must get into' list. I was, however, drawn to this album when I heard Verity Sharp playing the track 'Perfidia' (yes, the Old Glenn Miller standard), which features the melody performed on a 'musical leaf', during her stint on BBC Radio 3's 'Late Junction'. If you're old enough to remember Rolf Harris and his 'Stylophone', you can imagine how it sounds! On that one hearing, backed by Verity's recommendation, I rushed out and bought the album. This CD is an absolute joy. It's Mexican-flavoured take on traditional music and 20th century classics will appeal to all fans of 'world' and crossover music (in other words, yer typical 'Late Junction' listener - an opinion reinforced by Fiona Talkington who played another track during her turn on programme the other night).Whether you prefer Manu Chao or Mozart (or, like me, enjoy them equally), you'll find something new each time you listen to this recording. OK, this is a novelty record; but it's one that won't wear off for a long time. Just go ahead, open your ears (and your mind) and ENJOY!

Rubbish
2.0 out of 5 stars In my opinion they give contemporary music a bad name.
The Kronos Quartet is modernisme on the wrong foot.In my opinion they give contemporary music a bad name.
Kronos makes new friends.
The music of Kronos is one of innovation and collaboration. Their music has ranges from Tango (Piazzolla), African (Hamza El-Din, Jazz (Evans and Monk) and myriad other genres. Sometimes the music has such a density of texture and complexity of sound that one's mind and soul cannot take it in all at once, and the brain "fills up" in the same manner as reading great literature. But, there is "another" Kronos, which appears lighter and more humorous. Looks are deceiving, of course. Such is the music found in Nuevo. It is difficult to explain the joyous whirlwind this music creates. I wanted, at times, to dance as well as listen closely to all this music has to offer. Taste a sample and you will know what I mean. I am sure you will want more..."bet you can't listen to just five notes!"
EXCELENTE
Excelente CD, calidad, transporte. Todo 100 :)
Kronos goes Mexico
Kronos Caravan
Excellent album as are most of the Kronos' work. Caravan has Hungarian and Spanish influences that make for an exciting album.
Intriguing Music, No Context
Hearing the Kronos Quartet play selections from this album and talk about it one morning on NPR's St. Paul Sunday, I was captivated. They talked about the Mexican composers and musicians and how they had found them, and the instruments they played, the ways in which they were recorded. I wanted to learn more about these unique composers and musicians, and bought the album that morning. However, the liner notes offered absolutely nothing beyond who-played-on-what. It was a many-paged booklet, so cost wasn't a factor. Instead of discussions of these Mexican musicians and their instrumentation and careers, there were a lot of captionless photographs. Boring. The music that is haunting is still, of course, haunting and unique, but the producers could have enriched the whole experience for listeners with some intelligent liner notes. And finally, the last cut on the album: whose idea was that? Crashed the entire ambience that had been so carefully created. Dance mix? Isn't Kronos Quartet beyond such gimmicks?
