This is a truly brilliant compilation of early country blues. Not a dud track on here. Son House is justifiably famous with great recordings at various points in his long life. Kid Bailey, Rube Lacy, Willie Brown, Joe Callicot you may never have heard of them but their music is very special. This is a treasure trove of great music - dive in! Thanks to Document Records for making this CD available.

Only 1/4 of the album is Son House. Much of the rest is 1930's obscure blues
The legend of legends
Great vintage delta blues!Being a Son House fan, I have to comment that all of his recordings found on this were superb, albeit marred by the inevitable crackles from deteriorated circa 1930 vinyl.The three tracks that were particularly good to me were "My Black Mama," with its fantastic rhythm and slide ringing throughout.This song was the forerunner to what later became House's signature piece, "Death Letter.""Preachin' the Blues" is incredible, with House expertly weaving his guitar in and out, with that unmistakable field holler bass voice."Walking Blues" is wonderful and features a second guitarist, almost certainly none other than Willie Brown.Both Willie Brown tracks are good, but "Future Blues" is especially good, standing right up next to those from House himself.The other bluesmen found on this CD were very good, but I bought this for Son and Willie most of all, and their songs are truly worth it for a blues fan.This is also - I believe - the CD to get if you want the complete Grafton, Wisconsin Paramount Records sessions.For an even bigger treat (19 tracks!) for a Son House fan, get "The Complete Library of Congress Sessions, 1941-1942," found here:The Complete Library of Congress Sessions, 1941-1942Also, the one record of Son that had not been found turned up only back in 2005.You can find the two songs from it (along with lots of other extreme rarities) here: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

収録されている音源は、このCD以外でも聴けますが、このCDのいいところは、Willie BrownとKid Baileyが続けて聴けるところだと思います。同一人物という噂のある二人は、果たして本当に同一人物なのか、聴き比べるのに楽です。(PCとかに取り込めばいいんでしょうけど、音が変わっちゃうので個人的には×です)で問題は、Kid BaileyはWillie Brownか？とういことなんですが、・・・別人ですよね？？？Kid Baileyは29年、Willie Brownは30年の録音ですが、声が全く違うように聴こえるんですが・・・Willie Brownは渋い嗄れ声ですが、Kid Baileyは若々しくてすっきりした声。たった1年でこんなに変わるもんでしょうか？(録音とか、再生スピードの問題も影響している可能性は否定できませんが・・・)同一人物でないにしても、ギターで参加しているとの話もありますが、ギターもやっぱりWillie Brownじゃないように聴こえます。真実はどうなんでしょうか？？？ちなみに41年に、Make Me A Pallet On The Floor という曲が、Willie Brownにより録音されますが、これも別人ですよね？声もギターも違うと思います。ついでに、最近気づいたのですが、Willie Lee Brownで検索すると、レゾネーターギターを構えたブルーズマンの写真が出てきます。これは本物なんでしょうか？非常に気になります。そんなことを考えながら、このCDを聴くとなにか分かるかもしれません。内容は★５つの名盤だと思います。なんと言っても、絶頂期のSon HouseとWillie Brownが聴けますから。特にWillie BrownによるM&O BluesとFuture Bluesは、歌もギターも、デルタブルースの最高峰だと思います。

i think son house said it best in walking blues,' the blues are a low down shakin chill, if youve never had them, hope you never will'. yes, it wasnt robert johnson who said it first in his preachin blues(not on cd). luckily houses walking blues is on this cd(it was unissued and lost until 1985). but two songs unissued and lost until 2006 sadly are not on the cd(clarksdale moan and mississippi county farm blues). the cd also contains all 4 songs from garfield akers, 4 songs from blind joe reynolds, and a slide guitar gem from jim thompkins, and more.

Not the best recording
I'm going to deviate from the crowd on this one. The recording isn't that great; that's one thing. But I also think Son House's playing is better on subsequent albums. Compare the version of death letter blues here to what he recorded in the 60's. This one is still of historical interest. But if you just want to enjoy the music of this great bluesman at the top of his game, I think you will like the later recordings more.
