About the Author

Homer is known to have authored the first known literature of Europe. He is revered as one of the greatest of the ancient Greek epic poets in the Western classical tradition, and is credited with the enduring epic tales of The Illiad and The Odyssey, which were an important part of the Greek culture. Though when he lived is not known, it is estimated by Herodotus, a Greek historian, that Homer lived around 400 years before his own time. This places him somewhere around 800-900 BC. While some ancient sources claim that he lived close to the supposed time of the Trojan War, i.e. in the early 12th century BC, most modern researchers place him in the 7th or 8th century BC. Platos The Republic describes Homers significance to the ancient Greeks. He was described as the teacher of Greece, for the growing influence of Homeric epics in shaping Greek culture was widely recognized. His works are about fifty per cent speeches and provide models in persuasive writing and speaking.

It's a well made, stylish hardcover edition. Looks good and is easy to read.Also it's worth mentioning this edition uses the Roman translations of names rather than the Greek.Unfortunately my copy arrived with the edges quite poorly damaged in transit but I'm going to keep it anyway.

O livro, anunciado como uma edição de luxo, nao é mais do que uma edição em capa dura bastante simples. Nao se deram ao trabalho de plastificar ou envernizar a capa do livro. O livro chegou com uma batida na lombada (na quina) que descascou o papel da capa!Compro muitos livros na Amazon, que reputo como uma empresa seria, mas dizer que isto é uma" edição de luxo ", é uma inverdade. Ediçoes como os livros da Martin Claret, Antophagica, Companhia das Letras e outras, sao mesmo, algumas delas, ediçoes de luxo, livros para ler, guardar, colecionar,mas nao este que comprei agora.Como ainda não li esta edição, espero mesmo que a tradução seja tao esmerada como diz a Amazon.De ultimas, dou valor a uma edição caprichada porque considero que os livros fazem parte das nossas historias de vida, então o CONTEUDO e a apresentação dever ser os melhores!
