Porsche 911: The Ultimate Sportscar as Cultural Icon

Description:

The thinking man's sports car: a symbol of the relentless desire for peak power and limitless performance. The Porsche 911 inspires a worldwide ripple effect. When Ferdinand Porsche could not find a sports car he liked, he decided to build one himself. And now, the rest is history: Jerry Seinfeld drives it; Boris Johnson admires it; Steve McQueen loves it; and Jeremy Clarkson hates it. The Porsche 911 moves the world. Despised by many in Germany as a set of wheels for fat cats, it is the favorite car of free spirits and intellectuals in the U.S. and across the globe. The Porsche 911 was not just invented by one of the most fascinating and controversial families - it is also a technical meisterwerk. Since its launch in 1963, the 911 has built a reputation for itself as "the thinking man's sports car." Both a car and a cultural icon, it has earned a fan base that spans from young to old, East to West, connoisseur to enthusiast. Porsche 911: The Ultimate Sportscar as Cultural Icon explains how this German car became a global phenomenon and a symbol of aspiration, freedom, and the appetite for perfection, and even more, why, around the world, the 911 continues to fascinate gentlemen, ladies, and rogue drivers. In this book, Ulf Poschardt sends Porsche drivers to the shrink and concludes that a little narcissm can be a healthy thing; he then takes them on an engaging journey through the checkered history that defines their pride and joy. Not everyone can, nor indeed should, drive a Porsche, but Porsche 911: The Ultimate Sportscar as Cultural Icon lays bare the raw driving force behind the 911 for anyone intrepid enough to discover.

5.0 out of 5 stars ‘It is the cultural history of a romance’

N. · 8 July 2020

This book is simply an ode to a culture. It isn’t just about a car but speaks to the myriad ways in which the said car is appreciated, and foremost, is about the people who drive it.You can find all manner of books which describe with varying levels of dullness the minutiae and pedantry of the cars since their inception. Perhaps those details entertain some, but then this book won’t be of use. Perhaps other books which tell about the eponymous originators in all their glorious familial dysfunction may be of greater interest, but these details pale into insignificance when one actually realises that the car is about driving.Sure, the English language translation is rather curious in parts, but it sort of adds to the book’s charm, knowing it’s written from a Germanic perspective. This book tells of the romance of the 911, from how it maybe awakens the senses of a child, to how it still pulls on the heart strings of those who, through age, should reconsider driving altogether, but for the 911’s magic. The book demonstrates so very well that the author not only understands the car, but its very many drivers. As the author writes so eloquently himself, ‘that is why this book remains an incomprehensible labor of love for some less horsepower obsessed readers. It is the cultural history of a romance’.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting in parts but overall a bit rambling and disappointing

M. · 21 January 2023

I own a classic 911 and love how the brand has developed from the 1960s to the present day. So I thought this would be a riveting read. Sadly it was a bit disappointing, the writing style was at times rambling and not engaging, to the point I still haven't finished reading it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest read!

N.B. · 22 October 2021

An interesting book, taking a very different view of the 911 story. Some great information is buried in this rather dense volume with its highly stylized prose. I am finding it an effort to read.

Great content -and- photos!

M.T. · 31 March 2019

More than just another Porsche book, this one has not just stunning photos of our favorite enduring motorcar design but really clever writing that illustrates a respect for the reader's intellect and passion that rivals Porsche's engineering prowess. It's also a compelling coffee table book that never ceases to attract.

Instead of just a bunch of numbers and stats, the book takes an interesting view from perspective of owners and drivers

m.c. · 24 October 2017

There are loads of books out there written about the 911 - model stats, production numbers, options and the history of those who designed and built it. This book takes a different and interesting perspective on the history of the 911, that of 911 owners. What their motivations are to buy and own and how this has subtly changed since the 911 first went on sale. The book explores what drives people to own the 911 and what kind of people these owners were and are today. The joy of owning and driving a Porsche 911. An interesting read overall.
