Greek Myths

Description:

The Greek myths are timeless classics, whose scenes and figures have captivated us since ancient times. The gods and heroes of these legends hold up a mirror to the human condition, embodying universal characteristics and truths – whether it be the courage of Perseus, the greed of Midas, the vaulting ambition of Icarus, the vengeance of Medea, or the hubris of Niobe. These traits are the basis for immortal dramas and rich narratives, as profound as they are entertaining, which form the bedrock of our culture and literature today and remain relevant and fascinating for all readers, young and old alike.

This edition contains 47 tales based on the most famous episodes in Greek mythology, from Prometheus, the Argonauts, and Theseus to the Trojan War and Homer’s Odyssey. The individual texts are selected from the seminal work Sagen des klassischen Altertums (Gods and Heroes: Myths and Epics of Ancient Greece) by Gustav Schwab (1792–1850), and strikingly illustrated by 29 artists, among them outstanding representatives of the Golden Age of Book Illustration and the Arts and Crafts Movement, including Walter Crane (1845–1915), Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), William Russell Flint (1880–1969), and Virginia Frances Sterrett (1900–1930).

These illustrations are complemented by scene-setting vignettes for each story and a genealogical tree of Greek gods and goddesses by Clifford Harper, commissioned especially for this volume. Placing the tales in context, the book contains a historical introduction by Dr. Michael Siebler and is rounded off with biographies of all featured artists as well as an extensive glossary of ancient Greece’s most famous protagonists. The heroism, tragedy, and theater of Greek mythology glimmer through each tale in this lavishly illustrated edition, awakening the gods and heroes to new life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book

B. · 16 January 2022

Amazing book, great stories and lovely illustrations.I was worried about the price decrease but checking the whole book, there were no reprint issues as there was in another book I bought in the same delivery. I recommend people be wary of that because I had a taschen book with over 20 pages misprinted in German when it was on offer on Bolo. The book is dinged on the corners and edges but I assume that was in transit. If not, maybe that was why it was cheaper.Regardless, it's not reason enough for me to return this one, it's still a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book

M. · 19 July 2022

If you love Greek mythology and appreciate art this book is for youFabulously written and the illustrations are breath taking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book

s. · 27 September 2023

It’s a lovely coffee table book, and I’ve yet to look through the whole thing but the quality of the item and content are worth the money. I have a few Taschen books so trust the quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow at times

l. · 29 March 2024

I have a degree in Eng Lit but I am not really au fait with Greek myths and thought this book looked ok.However I found these stories to be quite stilted and at times they didnt seem to flow properly almost like we hadnt been told something relevant to the plot. I had hoped they would bring me up to speed but gave up about 25 % of the way through. Very very boring. I will charity shop this as it might do someone to cut up for collage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap paper

I.V. · 26 December 2021

I own other Taschen books and the books are beautiful. This one is printed on cheap paper and dulled images. What happened to the high quality books?

5.0 out of 5 stars Different paper ... but still great

A.B. · 11 January 2022

A lovely book filled with wonderful stories, great art throughout - super pleased I bought this book from Taschen. The paper is slightly different, not the glossy paper that you usually get from Taschen, but I found it quite reasonable for the book / art as well.

Low quality out of place images with inferior translation. Disappointing for the price.

l. · 2 July 2024

I decided to return this product not just because it arrived slightly damaged but the translation is inferior to another I read by the same author. There are also low quality images, out of place large distracting text on the pages like it is just meant for a show piece not actually to read. The images some of which are modern look out of place and juvenile. Purchase a different edition or Greek Myths Folio or something.
