Stieglitz: Camera Work: The Complete Photographs 1903-1917 (Bibliotheca Universalis)

Description:

Photographer, writer, publisher, and curator Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) was a visionary far ahead of his time. Around the turn of the 20th century, he founded the Photo-Secession, a progressive movement concerned with advancing the creative possibilities of photography, and by 1903 began publishing Camera Work, an avant-garde magazine devoted to voicing the ideas, both in images and words, of the Photo-Secession. Camera Work was the first photo journal whose focus was visual, rather than technical, and its illustrations were of the highest quality hand-pulled photogravure printed on Japanese tissue. This book brings together all photographs from the journal’s 50 issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have edition from Taschen

J.A. · 8 April 2018

This is an astounding little book from DK! If you are interested in early photography, and especially the crossover years between photography imitating neoclassical painting composition and then shifting into its own new kinds of images. It presents the complete set of content from "Camera Work", extending from 1903 to 1917, with beautifully digitised images, and text in three languages. The cover photo of theatre and early movie star, Evelyn Nesbit, is a gem but, as with so many photos in this book, it would have stood up to print at larger size. It would be lovely to see a limited print run of this book in a much larger format In the end, its small pages size is my only criticism of it, but that it exists at all makes up for its size. If you collect Taschen works, then don;t omit this one. It is certain to rise in value after its print run.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stgeiglitz - Camera Work

Although not a camera buff, I've always liked and admired photographs, particularly black and white imagery. This, dealing as it does, with photo-gravure is a bit of a new experience for me. There are some cracking images, as far as I am concerned, and this book should, in my opinion, be part of every photo lovers library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb value and a fine reference

M.G.W. · 29 May 2013

This book gets five stars for value and as a reference for anyone who wants to know which pictures appeared in each edition of Camera Work. The images are taken from the copies of Camera Work held by the RPS and here we get to the reasons for a lost star. Due to the reduced size of the book the images could not be reproduced at the size they appeared in the magazine and the quality of the images is rather poor. I compared the quality of the Coburn and Frederick Evans images here with those from other books I own and although the images presented here have the same content they do not remotely reflect the quality of work that these masters actually produced. So- explore this book for information but to really appreciate the images within do look elsewhere.Having said all that the book remains an astonishing bargain and belongs on every keen photographers bookshelf- as a reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A publishing and binding glitch ?

V.H. · 25 July 2018

I find it very odd that the first section of text is in English, the second in German, and the last in French. Whilst the titles of all the images are in English. A publishing and binding glitch ?. After a bit of research it seems no it's not a glitch. However the listing on this page says English is the language and really you'd need a keen eye to see 'Mul edition' meaning many languages.

Obra "must have" para amantes da fotografia.

S. · 26 October 2022

Great book, must have for passionate people!

F. · 26 September 2025

Camera Work is a fascinating book and a must-have for anyone passionate about photography. It provides an incredible window into the history of modern photography, showcasing not only Stieglitz’s visionary eye but also the work of groundbreaking artists he championed. The reproductions are beautifully done and give a sense of the original prints’ depth and texture. While it’s more of an art collection than a how-to guide, it offers endless inspiration and context for understanding the evolution of photographic expression. A true gem for both collectors and anyone who wants to deepen their appreciation of the photographic arts.

とてもよかったです!
