Science & Art of Strategy: A Living and Thinking Systems Approach to Strategy

Description:

The three parts of the book are ‘Science of Strategy’, ‘Art of Strategy', and the ‘Execution of Strategy'. Science of Strategy focuses on the fundamental of developing a strategic plan. The art of strategy explores the dynamic and complex nature of the environment and how an intricate understanding of the human brain could be useful in developing novel strategies. The last part places emphasis on the importance of the leadership and methodologies that could be useful to see through the successful implementation of the strategic plans. The book explores the importance of business intelligence, systems thinking, leverage or center of gravities, complex adaptive systems, wargaming, game theory, leadership, intuition, and the tipping point in developing and executing strategies.

It serves to lay out a broad framework on some of the most important considerations and tools that could be used to develop winning strategies. It focuses on
how to think rather than providing a laundry list of strategies that could be implemented in any organization. The examples provided have been deliberately kept brief and often disconnected or incomplete. The aim is for corporations to rigorously explore their own unique capabilities and circumstances to develop novel strategies that would fit their own specific context.

Reviews:

A wide ranging overview of strategy.

First of all a couple of very bad things: no page numbers and no index. (Oddly the table of contents has page numbers.) Secondly, I encountered some factual errors. However, I like the wide coverage of strategic information and have already found some authors and topics to look into further. The coverage of some areas is very sparse. (6 pages on game theory doesn't even scratch the surface of this topic.)Overall I expected a high level overview and that is pretty much what the book delivers. Just don't expect much depth on any particular topic.
