Review

Trust Vogue. Those two words will enable any knitter, novice or pro, to refresh, renew, and learn new stitches and techniques. For this reference, substantially revised since the 1989 first edition and subsequent updates, the editors thoroughly re-vetted directions and explanations, with significant differences. For instance, a tip now may cover how to improve cast-ons, and a technique description may address neatening the last loop. Chapters are color-coded for ease of use. New, especially, is a chapter on constructing and designing accessories, such as balaclavas, chullos, mittens, gloves, and socks. What's most impressive is the number offered of possible variations on a technique or stitch: 25 methods of casting on, 14 for binding off, and various choices of finishing and seaming. Don't expect stitch swatches, however; what this guide provides is a thorough grounding in how to knit or design anything, completed by a good index, a bibliography, and eight pages of knitters' graph paper. --Booklist

This revised and updated edition of the classic knitting guide continues the tradition of comprehensive information presented in a clear, concise manner. Significant content has been added on designing knitting patterns (with separate chapters for sweaters, shawls, and accessories), with photographs and overall design updated, and information reorganized to make it more accessible. The book is arranged by topic, with each chapter providing an in-depth guide to a specific skill or technique. A footer at the bottom of each page provides page references for topics addressed in the text or diagrams. Full-color photographs and detailed drawings illustrate each topic, and the editors intersperse expert tips and techniques throughout. VERDICT An essential addition to the knitter's bookshelf. --Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Seems comprehensive and a bit daunting to a beginner

This looks a lovely book and I'm looking forward to trying to learn from it. My daughter knocked out one of those crochet squares a few days ago after watching a video but never having tried crocheting before. I thought I'd try to go one better and have a go at knitting. Unfortunately I've reached an age where all the older generation of knitters in the family have passed on. So as I don't know anyone who could teach me and don't feel inclined to join a class, I'll have to learn on line and/or through a book. This book (less of a book and more of a paving slab really) does have great recommendations and reviews on this site. I can see why there might be a reason to get the quick reference flexibound version as this isn't going to easily balance on your knee when trying to work out what to do next with a pair of needles in your hands. Perhaps the solution is to scan or photocopy the pages you need for a project and have them on a clipboard. Anyway the book looks every bit as impressive and perhaps more so than I expected. If I can only knit a pair of socks or a woolen hat before the winter's out then I'll see that as quite a success.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile upgrade

Just over a decade ago, I returned to knitting to combat arthritis and boredom/pain. With no mother or grandmother any more, I bought the last version of this book, and found it invaluable. The book takes you through everything you need as a beginning knitter, and well beyond. Whilst I have bought many other books and magazines, this remained centre shelf at all times. I didnt ponder for long when I saw how many oages the new version had, as I always like to try new things, and am very glad I did upgrade. I gave the old version to a friend who I taught to knit left handed, who is now branching out into things beyond stocking stitch. So what in the book? It takes you right from fibre and tool choices- with the addition now of many new fibres and tools through to designing your own knits. There are excellent diagrams on many stitches and cast on methods, and explanations of english vs continental vs left hand knitting, as well as the more complex styles like circular, brioche, mosaic and centre out knitting. The problem fixers are great for those ooops moments when its way too late, or embarrassing, to phone a friend. The glossaries are great and include basic crochet, as some patterns do include a bit for finishing etc. The design section takes you through from measuring yourself, via neck and pocket designs, through to blocking and sewing up. There are two new sections on designing accessories and scarves with many different styles explained. Finally there are sections on embellishing, edges, and even storing your knitting. If you only ever buy one book for your knitting, make it this one. If you then want to add a couple more, I would recommend a stitch dictionary (sometimes called a stitchionary!) and the book of 6000 pullover possibilities by Melissa Leapman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book but very USA Centric

A. · 11 January 2024

It's a great book and one that I will find very useful to refer back to time and again but I'm knocking off a star because of the book being so USA Centric. When talking about yarns in comparison, 1ply, 2ply, 3ply & 4ply don't even get a mention and nothing about, for example, 12ply in AUS/NZ. And what's with missing out entirely, the 7mm knitting needle just because the USA doesn't have that size, leave the column blank then whilst telling Americans a 7mm knitting needle does exist.Anyway......this book could be much better by being more inclusive for the rest of the English speaking world including mainland Europe when in most countries, English is widely spoken but they still have different yarn weight names.

This has been on my wish list for a while. Now I’ve got it. It’s so useful for those queries on technique.

Must have knitting reference

To big for knitting bag. The vogue knitting ultimate quick reference carries the majority of the information in a smaller spiral bound. I personally have both. this is more a coffee table style book but a must for those new to knitting or looking to add new techniques.
