Colonel Sun: James Bond 007

Description:

Colonel Sun was the first James Bond novel published after the death of Ian Fleming. Penned by one of Britain's finest writers, Kingsley Amis, this new edition celebrates the novel's 55th anniversary. Released on October 5th, James Bond Day, this edition features a new foreword by Anthony Horowitz.

Lunch at Scott's, a quiet game of golf, a routine social call on his chief M – James Bond's life has begun to fall into a pattern that threatens complacency, until the sunny afternoon when M is kidnapped and all of his house staff savagely murdered.

The action ricochets across the globe to a volcanic Greek island, where the malign Colonel Sun Liang-tan of the People's Liberation Army of China is collaborating with the ex-Nazi commander, Von Richter, in planning a world-dominating conspiracy. Bond’s allies – the beautiful, brown-haired Greek agent, Ariadne Alexandrou; along with a tough-as-nails former World War II resistance fighter – are quickly neutralized by the venomous Colonel Sun. Alone and unarmed, faces off against these two nefarious villains.

Stripped of all professional aids, James Bond faces the deadly devices of Colonel Sun and his Nazi cohort in a test that brings him to the verge of his physical abilities.

I've already rated this novel in the past but this rating and review is for the new VINTAGE release of Amis one and only Bond novel. The story is frankly one of the best in the series (this is a better novel than one or two of Flemings) and is a must-read for a Bond fan. This VINTAGE edition includes an introduction by Kingsley Amis (written in 1991) and gives us a brief but insightful re-telling of how he came to write this novel. The cover for this edition is classy and straightforward (like the plot inside) and I'm so pleased that this novel's long overdue re-publication has finally come about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Above average but not brilliant

L.F. · 25 November 2021

Decent read, keeps you interested but I found the plot was bit thinly spread. All overly descriptive in all the wrong places. Personally find John Gardner or Sabastian Falk's bond novels to be a more satisfying read. That said it was still a good read with some good twists and turns and some aspects stollen for some of the latest bond films. 4/5

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not the best 007 novelist

R.s. · 31 July 2023

Not bad. But i've read almost all of the Bond books by various authors but Kingsley Amis seems to go overboard whenever Bond and the girl get down to it. He seems to go into every little detail that makes him sound a bit pervy. Maybe it's just me but have read better.

5.0 out of 5 stars great reading

Loved it. Very good. They ought to make films of these other authors writing James Bond - they'd make a fortune.I've always liked Kingsley Amis and this is tiptop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and faithful to Fleming’s Bond

J.D. · 13 November 2021

A credible Bond storyline without the gimmickry that has plagued some of the other Bond authors. Well thought out characters including a plausible villain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great bond read....maybe a film?

S.a.K. · 20 June 2019

Full of the usual bond moments worth a read at the price...enjoyed the story plenty of Fleming at his best!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best of the "non Ian Flemings".....

S. · 30 May 2016

I think this is the best of the Bond books not written by Ian Fleming, and very much in that style. Perhaps this is because it was written so close to the actual time that Fleming had written the Bond books and not written decades later, therefore easier to write and replicate. In any event, it is certainly worth trying for any Bond aficionado.

Not quite Fleming in style and metre but a ripping yarn. Better than current sequels. Read and enjoy with gusto.

If you're a Fleming fan then this book will make you wish that Amis continued writing Bond. The story doesn't ape Fleming at all and instead feels so close in tone and voice to the author's work that it's uncanny. But I don't say this to diminish Amis's contributions because he does an excellent job with established characters like Bond and M while creating compelling new characters like the beautiful Ariadne, the tough and honorable Litsas, and the demented Colonel Sun himself.Amis allows us to see M out of the office and shows Bond with no gadgets, usually armed with just a knife, grenades, and his wits. Colonel Sun is a brilliant villain, truly deranged and eerie to read and his infamous torture scene is compelling and disturbing all on its own. Much was made of the recent 2015 Bond film SPECTRE homaging this torture sequence and I can assure you that this is one of those cases where the book is far more effective. If you enjoy the films you may see that this story has been homaged in For Your Eyes Only, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day, and the aforementioned SPECTRE. I'm a longtime fan of the films and reading the novels is a great way to rediscover Bond. If you decide to do so, start with Fleming but make sure not to skip this one.

Good Bond novel
