My college lecturer uses this book to teach us students in class. I bought it myself and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is studying at college or has a interest in motor vehicle at home.It has good diagrams of components and is written clearly for people to understand. 10/10

I was hoping that this would be a nicely illustrated version of the Hilliers book. But its not really a replacement at all. The book is very high level. For example chapter on suspension simply lists the different types of arrangements with a brief description and some nice pictures. There is almost no description of the engineering problem each approach is trying to solve and where the compromises in the design are. There are fewer cutaway and diagrammatic pictures and these are poorly annotated - so it is often completely unclear how it all works together.A great example is explaining a CVT and how it works. Hilier is great for this kind of thing. With a simplified drawing demonstrating the problem it is trying to solve and also some nice coverage of the history of the various attempts that have been tried to solve it.About a quarter of the book is about legislation - MOT, Health and Safety etc. Which is I suppose aimed at people doing some kind of diploma - but pretty useless if you just want to know how cars work and how to fix them.I guess its useful as a companion to Hilier - but if I could only have one, there is no contest.

Arrived well packaged and promptly. Our eldest grandson is embarking on a mechanics apprenticeship and this is one of the text books he needs so we are sure he'll enjoy this part of his Christmas present.
