Spitfire Manual 1940

Description:

How to fly the legendary fighter plane in combat using the manuals and instructions supplied by the RAF during the Second World War. An amazing array of leaflets, books and manuals were issued by the War Office during the Second World War to aid pilots in flying the Supermarine Spitfire, here for the first time and using the original 1940s setting, they are collated into a single book. An introduction is supplied by expert aviation historian Dilip Sarkar. Other sections include aircraft recognition, how to act as an RAF officer, bailing out etc.

'As a reminder of times as a fighter pilot in WWII this book is a must' -- Aircrew Association

About the Author

Dilip Sarkar has been fascinated by the Battle of Britain since childhood, he remains both moved and inspired by the story of Churchill's fabled Few, those young airmen who stood between freedom and a Britain dominated by Nazi Germany. Since the 1970s he has met and interviewed more Battle of Britain pilots than any other historian. He has researched the subject thoroughly and has published over thirty books, titles which include the only biographical works formally endorsed by the families of both Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader and Air Vice-Marshal Johnnie Johnson. In 2003, Dilip was made an MBE for services to aviation history, and elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society in 2006. He lives in Worcester. 5.0 out of 5 stars Takes you back to the late 1930's with old comments a good read.

This is a modern copy of the WW2 original and as such it is not a tactile book but a smooth modern printed version, the content is of course mostly the original page layouts and does not detract from the content for the price it is superb. Interesting read. Very pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stocking filler for plane buffs

I bought this as a present for a Spitfire loving friend. I don't know what constitutes good content for Spitfire lovers but I had a leaf through it before wrapping and it seemed quite comprehensive with little cartoons and drawings to illustrate the articles. There were tips on dogfighting, flight procedures and more. It does transport you back to those heady scary days. My friend's wife reported that he was well pleased with the book and had his nose stuck in it through a large part of Christmas day. A great little gift for a Secret Santa money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spitfire manual and comprehensive guide

Lots and lots of extra information in this book besides the Air Ministry guide to flying the Spitfire, leaflets, how to attack enemy aircraft, aircraft recognition, how to act as an RAF officer, bailing out, hints and tips, etc. A good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little book

F. · 21 November 2010

If this book had contained only the Spitfire pilot manual, it would have been disapointing. However, the Author had the excellent idea to add many extras that really makes it worth your money:- more than 40 pages of introduction by the Author.- extracts of a Pilot log book (from Johnnie Johnson, Britain's best fighter pilot).- examples of Pilot combat reports (still from J. Johnson).- 4 WW2 manuals:1. Forget-me-nots for fighters2. General notes on air gunnery and air fighting3. Bag the hun!4. Warplanes: card game for aircraft spotters.Overall, 274 pages of very good material for less than 6£.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book for spitfire fans!

My dad loves this book! He's a big fan of war aircraft, especially the spitfire - this book is ideal because its the sort you can dip in and out of rather than reading cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant

L. · 25 January 2021

Amazing book that tells you all about the spitfire, from details of the plane to instruments inside the cockpit. This also tells you how to fly the plane from take off to landing, how to use the guns and to proper way to bail out!Packed with official documents and also stories from the pilots themselves, this will keep anyone who love planes entertained. Excellent

Great book

C.A. · 29 August 2017

A historical book with lots of information. The book offers the point view and pratice of combat aviation during the Battle of Britain. It a good piece of history for those who are fan of the legendary Spitfire.

Great balls of Fire!

B. · 15 April 2014

This is a collection of re-printed actual documents used to train pilots in WWII on the Spitfire aircraft. Along with the Haynes manual you're all set. It certainly gives a period reference to how pilots were trained using humour, cartoons and diagrams. I should know as my 92 year old Dad is an RCAF Spitfire pilot! It took a while to get the book but it was worth the wait.

Good gift

Got it for my nephew for His birthday. He loved it.

Pour mordus d'aviation et d'histoire

D. · 5 May 2011
