Review

This is a remarkable achievement. Like Batman's Utility belt for teachers. So many practical, wise, inspiring, and achievable ideas are packed in here. I can imagine this becoming as indispensable for teachers as Gray's Anatomy is for doctors... -- Stephen Fry, English actor and comedian

If you want a book to assist with your work with traumatised children, choose this one. It is the best! This is the most comprehensive, accurate, and practically valuable guide for managing children made vulnerable by adversity which all teachers should have.
The authors provide a beautifully written, well laid out, accessible and accurate understanding of a highly complicated area and go on to identify all (yes all) the problems that can arise in an educational context with a child who experienced adversity and trauma and offer explanations and practical solutions to support their management.
The book is a remarkable and invaluable resource for all those working with children, from senior clinician to professional support staff.

-- Professor Peter Fonagy, OBE, Chief Executive, Anna Freud National Centre for Children & Families

A must read for all teachers! The A-Z will empower and equip teachers to understand trauma and create the best possible environment for children to feel safe enough to learn. -- Helen Fearn, Primary Teacher, Adoptive Mum, Foster parent, Therapeutic Parenting Coach and Trainer

At last, the ultimate, practical guide to understanding children and their behaviour. Humane and grounded in science,
this book could change lives. Instead of punishing 'naughty' or 'badly behaved' children, teachers and others will get the tools to do their job, recognising the impact of trauma and other adversity, and enabling children to learn and to grow. -- Sir Norman Lamb, Chair of Maudsley NHS and Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition

Every person working in a School needs to read this book! By demystifying complex behaviour, this book gives readers the confidence to question 'School-shaped' approaches and the tools to build relationships based on trust, which is the key to meeting the needs of children affected by trauma. -- Naomi Edmund, adoptive parent and former school nurse

The authors' hands on experience of developmental trauma means the book is written with a lot of heart and the advice therein has real integrity. It is also written with an understanding for the lot of teachers trying their best to accommodate ever more complex needs in their classrooms. The result is
a refreshingly succinct, accessible, informative read - one that parents and teachers alike should find immensely useful. -- Nick Moss, headteacher, Minchinhampton Primary Academy

Reviews:

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books about trauma

T.t. · 21 April 2025

I work in a secondary pru with children who end up out of mainstream . If every teacher and professional who worked with young people read this book they would have a much better understanding of the consequences of trauma and how this is demonstrated every day by the young people . It is jam packed with every behaviour you may see . Each chapter is broken down into what it looks like , why it might happen , preventative strategies and strategies to helpI recommend this for anyone who works in primary or secondary

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential teacher and SENDCo book

S. · 25 October 2023

As a school SENDCo, The A-Z of Trauma Informed Teaching is the all-in-one resource I have needed for a very long time! This book is an incredibly easy read yet it unpicks what are incredibly complex behaviours. It explains challenging behaviours all schools are experiencing and provides clear, practical advice to support the school team. What I love most about this book is how it has children at the heart of it, children who need us to understand them when they don't understand themselves and don't have the ability to communicate what they need from us. This is what makes it an absolute essential resource in every school. It is relevant from early years through to high school and it gives me, in my role, a renewed energy, knowledge and practical next step to support both my colleagues and our ever increasing number of children with either early trauma or neurodivisty. I am already using this book as CPD to support all staff, including caretakers and admin teams who work with our children. Thank you to those who have taken such care and time to create a tool that provides practical approaches and helpful support that actually benefits all children, in every setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, full of great suggestions - could come with a printing error!

L. · 1 June 2025

As an Early Years teacher working in a diverse community with a variety of different needs in my classroom, this has been an insightful read. I've marked a number of pages to come back to and noted some great suggestions of strategies for supporting different behaviours in the setting. I can definitely see myself returning to this book as I progress through my career and recommending it to colleagues. The only reason I've dropped a star is because my copy is missing a number of pages - it jumps from page 174 to page 181. This is a brand new copy, so it's obviously a printing error. I purchased this 3 months or so ago, and have only just had time to get to the point where the pages seem not to have been included. Frustratingly, it was a point in the book that I was really keen to read. I wish I had noted this earlier so I may have been able to request a return/new copy. It might be worth leafing through when you receive your copy to ensure this hasn't also happened to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every teacher and school governor should have this book.

H.L. · 25 August 2023

The A-Z of Trauma-Informed Teaching is such an important book; so clear and well written. It's quick and easy to pick up and put down, dip into and top up your reserves when you are feeling compassion fatigue. It is the 'go-to' manual that every teacher and school governor should have and every PGCE student should be given. I highly recommend this book. It's easy to read & packed full of useful knowledge. A must have for anyone working with children and young people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed book for any teaching staff!

S.A. · 31 August 2023

This book should be read by anyone wishing to understand and support children’s distressed and confusing behaviour. Part 1 details the reasons behind the difficulties we may see and helps us ‘climb into their world’. Part 2 lists an A-Z of the most common issues. It is a comprehensive but easy read offering the practical application (which is so often missing from a lot of training on the same topic), written by authors who clearly understand the present difficulties and limitations in all educational settings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for teachers, adopters and school counsellors

E. · 1 October 2023

This book is excellent and I wish it had existed when I first adopted. It is a treasure trove of information for all parents and professionals working with children who have experienced trauma. The layout enables the reader to look up particular issues and use strategies to support the young people. Underlying this book are the authors' hearts for the relational in education and to promote understanding of how children's behaviours express their emotional states and how we can all support them.

super great outline for common behavior and trauma informed approaches

Best reference and go-to

M.S.D. · 27 August 2024

I'm a secondary teacher and I thoroughly 'enjoyed' reading this book. I perhaps should have read it more as a reference and go-to as the title suggests it's an A-Z. But I found the first part really informative and applicable to secondary, not only primary. Definitely has changed my pedagogical approach to inclusion.
