Changing Times Changing Trains: Memoirs and Insights on Running Railways

Description:

Hailed by the Sunday Times as "one of the best man-managers and strategists in the rail business", Richard Brown's book is part memoir and part critique. Through the lens of his many, varied roles over a 43 year career, two thirds spent in senior leadership positions, he reflects on the UK rail industry's changing structures and ownerships, analysing what worked and why. He was part of the leadership team which moved British Rail's InterCity business into profit in the 1980s, and then led the successful transformation of Eurostar into a high performing railway business in the 2000s. Along the way he provides many fascinating insights into how to win more passengers and improve a railway's financial performance. In short, how to organise and run a successful railway. With a career that spanned both public and private sector roles, including membership of the Department for Transport's, National Express's and other rail industry Boards, he offers a unique analysis of the strengths, weaknesses and different cultures of public and private sector organisations. His conclusion offers a clear direction of travel as to how Britain's rail industry might best be organised as it prepares to be nationalised again. This is a must-read for today's and tomorrow's railway leaders and for anyone interested in the necessary reshaping of the industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential experience for those creating Great British Railways

R.F. · 23 April 2025

Richard Brown's book is required reading as Britain is at the start of recreating a vertically integrated railway bringing track and trains after three decades of separation since privatisation. He joined British Rail as a trainee in the mid 1970s and as a rising manager experienced at first hand Chairman Sir Bob Reid's 10 year programme (1982-1992) to transform British Rail into a business led railway. With privatisation his experience ranged from running a franchise to leading an owning group's portfolio of franchises. He then moved to CEO of Eurostar. At the end of the book he applies this wide-ranging experience to advice on the current challenge of turning the political concept of Great British Railways into commercial and operational reality. As a writer who has been 'embedded' in the railway industry for the period covered by the book, I can't recommend it too highly, My copy is full of post-it page markers for future reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very solid commentary on an interesting era of railway history

A good read with a very interesting record of a changing railway , involving not just the "domestic" side of the UK , but the complications of dealing with trans Tunnel passenger operations. Enjoyed t very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable and lucid insight into recent railway history

C. · 8 April 2025

Knowing little about modern railway history before I read this engaging book, I now feel much better informed as to how the industry has metamorphosed over the past few decades. Written very much from an inside perspective, there were many brilliant insights into how some of these changes could and perhaps should have been managed, and suggestions for how the railway network in the UK might improve - advice we can only hope those now in charge, heed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating autobiography

5.0 out of 5 stars A GERRY FIENNES FOR THE 21st CENTURY

N.H. · 7 December 2024

This calmly written but revealing dissection of the flawed relationship between the state and the railways is a worthy successor to the keystone "must read" works from the 1960s: "Red for Danger" and "I tried to run a railway".If you want informed insight into why your recent trips by train might have been a bit pants, the answers you need are in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read for anyone interested in the recent history of our railways and their future.

R.S. · 8 January 2025

A well-written and highly readable account of Richard Brown’s long career in the highest levels of railway management in the UK and internationally. He recounts at first hand his experiences and challenges through the highs and lows of the rail industry since the 1970s. In doing so, he tackles almost every aspect of railway management, from resolving day to day operational issues to implementing privatisation and helping to transform the industry’s business culture to that of a more customer-driven service. The book is a fascinating insight into the eventful story of the railways in the last 50 years, including BR modernisation, privatisation, the advent of Eurostar, and the rise of competition from airlines. At each stage Brown methodically reflects on his experience and draws well-argued conclusions about the way forward. His emphasis throughout is on management and leadership in the railway sector, and his ideas about good practice in these areas are well worth reading in their own right. He concludes with some thoughtful suggestions about further rationalising the structure of the industry and its relations with government, for the benefit of travellers and the taxpayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for managers

J.A.T. · 5 December 2024

It’s tempting to say - as the publishers do - that anyone involved in the railway industry, or anyone interested in railways, needs to read this book, by a former senior manager in the industry. Of course they do - it’s an insightful study of what’s gone well and what’s gone wrong in the past, and a sharp eyed guide to what needs to be done now and in the future. But it’s also a perceptive inside view of management - how to get the very best out of people. That’s a skill that’s sadly lacking in both public and private sectors, and Brown has a lot to say about it. He’s done the hard yards and gained the experience, and I would guess (though he does make much of this) that he’s got the scars to prove it. If you’re a manager and this book isn’t on your shelf, you’re missing a trick. And if it’s not on your manager’s shelf, you should - tactfully - buy them a copy.
