From botany to mindful brushstrokes: introducing Olga Koelsch's unique watercolour flowers guide.

Artist and pattern designer Olga Koelsch unlocks the serene world of watercolour painting with her new book, How to Paint Transparent Watercolour Flowers. This guide offers a unique approach to watercolour painting, focusing on the delicate beauty of see-through flowers.

Olga combines the precision of botanical illustration with the fluidity and expressiveness of modern watercolour techniques. Readers will learn how to reveal the inner anatomy of flowers through gradually applying transparent layers of watercolour. Olga's methods are meditative, encouraging artists to slow down and adopt a mindful approach to creativity. The book is designed for beginners and seasoned artists, providing a gentle step-by-step guide through the process of painting six stunning plant projects: magnolia, eucalyptus, bellflower, rose, peony, and iris.

Beyond the brushwork, How to Paint Transparent Watercolour Flowers offers guidance on practical applications for these techniques. Olga showcases a stunning collection of her own artworks, demonstrating how painted flowers can be transformed into beautiful cards, wall art, and even fabric designs.

Leisure Painter, September 2024

Olga Koelsch, it turns out, is a YouTube and Instagram tutor and, if that makes you run for the hills, please wait while I join you. Before we depart, though, let's at least have a look around.

What we have here is a somewhat specialist, but really rather useful guide to introducing transparency into watercolour. Although the subject is flowers you could, at a push, adapt the technique to almost anything. I have added that note of caution because this is project-based and the instructions are very specific, with results that produce an ethereal effect that goes beyond just glazing. You have to want to paint in this style more than just occasionally, I think.

As I intimated, this is a useful book that should not be summarily dismissed and has an undoubted appeal. It is well presented and executed, but any purchase decision would be a highly personal one.

Wonderful Projects with Exciting Techniques and Excellent PDF printable sketches

M. · 22 June 2024

Lovely book with great photos, excellent instructions, and exciting techniques! I have posted a photo of my first attempt with one of her studies. For a first try, I think it came out okay. It's very simple to place a piece of typing paper over the image, trace it, and then use that tracing on a light box to transfer the image to my watercolor paper. I actually prefer this, over interacting with new websites that want new memberships. Olga has offered up a wonderful opportunity for the reader to dive into elegant, well instructed projects that I will be very pleased to hang on the walls of my home or to give as gifts to loved ones. I can see how an inexperienced artist might find this technique a bit simplistic in appearance and that's deceptive. This technique creates a gorgeous contemporary transparent effect that is full of air and light. Technique is everything in achieving this style of painting. It does take some mastery. The instructions for mixing colors and how to use them are fantastic. Thank you Olga! Well done!UPDATE: on Web download for sketches of projects. Out of curiosity about the report that Olga's downloads for her designs were not available, I went to see for myself. It's my experience that artists are pretty reliable and trustworthy to provide what they say they will, so it was hard for me to believe that after all the hard work Olga put into this effort there would be some kind of big snafu. There wasn't. I created a free membership at the reported website, marked that I owned her book, went to visit her book page, and a lovely pdf file was available for download and I printed it out. There is no jinxy thing going on here. Olga's materials are there and available, just as she reported they are. I had no problem at all getting that file. That being said. These files are smallish and these sketches will probably fit on a 5x7 at most. I prefer to trace her drawings directly from her book, which are quite a bit larger, and paint her studies onto 9x12 watercolor paper. The suggestion that these studies cannot be done without those download is erroneous. I completed four of her studies with no downloads. Now that I've found them and printed them, I probably won't use them because they are smaller than the paintings I want to paint. Great Job Olga!!! You did a great job of sharing this technique.
