The Daily Mash: Class Wars: A Field Guide to Being British

Description:

The Daily Mash, a British comedy institution since 2008, rips the p*ss out of everyone no matter what class they are, mistakenly believe they are or wrongly aspire to be. If you’re British, this book is for you.

In Britain, everyone knows their place. And, to ensure they never leave their allotted slot in the
class hierarchy, they abhor both those who imagine themselves better than them above and those they’re effortlessly superior to below.

But are the
upper classes venal fops who think only of titles and money? Are the middle classes as petty and pathetically status-obsessed as they appear? Are the working classes all white van drivers consumed by Ginsters pasties and Ralph Lauren polo shirts? The answers to all three questions, obviously, is ‘yes’. However, being British, we’re able to laugh at our own foibles and more importantly to laugh at all those other pr*cks.

Whether you’re a member of Britain’s monarchy, aristocracy and political class, whether you’re a
Mail-reading xenophobe terrified of immigrants or a Guardian-reading liberal terrified of Arts Councils cuts, or whether you have a proper job and support a lower-league football team, this is for you.

The Daily Mash is a satirical website created in 2007, providing commentary on topical news stories and other areas of interest. Since then, no one has escaped their wit, regardless of social class. Class Wars poses the questions Do the upper classes only think of titles and money? Do the middle classes really want to climb the social ladder while looking down on those below them? Do all the working classes drive a white van? These questions, and more, are answered! If you are easily offended, then this book may not be for you, but if you don’t mind having a laugh at your own expense then this book may be right up your street. Class Wars is a collection of Daily Mash articles on the subject of class, many of which had me laughing out loud. It is impossible to read this book without trying to place yourself somewhere on the class scale but the stories will soon have you realising how hard this is – I found myself identifying with numerous stories (none of the upper class however!).I listened to the audiobook version, brilliantly narrated by Adam Bromley. This is the perfect way to read this book as it is great to dip in and out of and is the ideal accompaniment for travelling or when doing jobs around the house.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough original material to be worth buying for subscribers to the website

I'm a long time fan of the Daily Mash, a comedy website that posts short satirical takes on the day's news, and it's related TV series, 'The Mash Report'. It's left leaning/liberal in perspective, British, and probably most relevant to the 'Millennial' generation in terms of the references,This book is a collection of Mash articles related to the topic of the British class system - although that brief is fairly widely interpreted. As you'd expect the stories are funny - some funnier than others. Certainly it's more consistently funny than a lot of 'humour' books on the market. I'd compare it to the 'Private Eye' annual or one of the annual books of cartoons some newspapers publish. If you are a subscriber to the Mash website, then you will have read a lot of these before (maybe all of them - my memory isn't good enough to be sure) which does reduce their impact. As such I wouldn't buy it as a gift for someone who already reads the website, but it would make a good Christmas present for someone who doesn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars A easy fun read

was bought for me as a gift, never read the mash before but really enjoyed it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dreadfull.

A.C. · 21 October 2024

I could only manage a few pages of this nonsense. If this is supposed to be British humour, then god help us. It certainly isn't worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Astutely observed, a real gem.

H.F. · 10 October 2024

Astutely observed, takes no prisoners and is absolutely hilarious with plenty of laugh out loud moments. This delivers line after line and on varied topics. I probably identify as somewhere right down the middle so could make use of looking both up and down and chuckling at the full set because I’m including laughing at myself. This is absolutely packed with head nodding moments about growing up and living in Britain and there are so many tongue in cheek moments. I wouldn’t advise reading this if you’re easily offended or uncomfortable with your status in life but if you’re good at not taking yourself too seriously then this is right up your boulevard. My copy was slightly blighted by an unfortunate affliction whereby any ‘fi’ or ‘fl’ combinations within words were missing in action. This, however, was quite good fun to fill in the blanks (read ll in the blanks) and it was as though I was reading the whole thing in an elitist secret code. Shhh. A great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suffers from repetition

B.H. · 10 October 2024

Thank you to NetGalley and Michael O'Mara Limited for this ARC.I love the Mash Report and find it very funny so was certain I would enjoy this book.It looks like The Daily Mash is not the same thing even though it shares writers. It goes on and on about just one topic: class, and while some observations are very astute and funny and all classes are equally roasted (which is a contradiction in terms), it suffers from repetition. Over 200 pages of this is just too much for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic satire from the best in the business!

J. · 15 November 2024

The Daily Mash always delivers a laugh and this book is no exception. Picks on the many and varied nuances of the British class system. Perfect gift for those hard-to-buy-for people in your life, I'll be getting more copies for husband, my work colleagues' Secret Santa, etc...
