Stitch Head: The Graphic Novel (Stitch Head Graphic Novel, 1)

Description:

The first book in the best-selling, laugh-out-loud STITCH HEAD series by award-winning author Guy Bass, with illustrations by Pete Williamson, now brought to almost-life again in this brand-new, monstrously magnificent graphic novel edition.

Enter the darkly funny world of Stitch Head, as he steps out of the shadows into the adventure of an almost-lifetime…

Deep in the maze-like dungeons of Castle Grotteskew, eccentric Professor Erasmus created Stitch Head, a small, almost-human creature. His experiments continued, filling the castle with creations so fabulously monstrous that Stitch Head was long forgotten. Until a travelling circus ringmaster knocks at the castle door, promising to make Stitch Head a star. Is this Stitch Head’s chance to venture beyond the castle walls? Or could he be making a terrible mistake…?

Full of monstrous fun, STITCH HEAD is perfect for fans of GRIMWOOD, AMELIA FANG and THE NOTHING TO SEE HERE HOTEL.

Review

“This graphic novel edition of the first story in the much-loved series is terrific. Pete Williamson, the original illustrator, has brilliantly depicted these characters once more, in a muted palette that is vibrantly lit, and drenched in atmosphere. There are many illustrative details to pore over, and it is packed with action. There are emotional moments too, and the story subtly asks the reader to consider who the real monsters are – the humans or the creatures. The font is in upper and lower case, making it easier to read than all capitals, which will appeal to all readers, and the story is divided into four parts. Darkly funny, accessible and thought-provoking.” BookTrust

Great story for young readers

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book

I have the box set of Stitch Head books, patiently waiting for me to read them. And normally I would read the original stories before reading the graphic novel interpretation. But with this one, I couldn't resist. This is a fantastically funny, cute, and sometimes scary read for younger readers. Stitch Head, our eponymous hero of this book was created in the depths of Castle Grotteskew. Stitch Head has always stayed true to his master, the scientist who brought him to half-life. He has also managed to manage the other creations that he has achieved, making sure that they don't cause his master or the townsfolk any harm. But he has been forgotten by the person who created him, and that is a lonely place to be. Until fortune comes knocking on the castle doors. Could this be the time for Stitch Head to become unforgettable? This was such a charming tale. The characters were very well brought to (half) life. For younger readers, they will love the story, but there is also a moral to tell. The illustrations are also fantastic, brilliantly bringing another life to this story. If you have read the original books, I would still encourage you to read the graphic novel. It is a great start to a series, and I am definitely looking forward to the next graphic novel in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously dark, witty and clever. Everyone needs a friend!!

N.R. · 16 February 2024

Oooo this is a deliciously dark gothic graphic novel. There are tonnes of fans of Stitch Head's fiction chapter book series around the globe, and I know already from the young people I've shown this new book to so far, that the reworking for graphic novel format is incredibly exciting!! Go team!! Pete Williamson has a unique and immediately recognisable illustrative style (I particularly loved his illustrations for the young reader fiction 'Leo's Map of Monsters' series for OUP a couple of years ago). The circus has come to the dark and gloomy town of Grubbers Nubbin, not your usual circus, but a carnival of 'freakish' wonders, the world's 'almost-human oddities' on display. Ringmaster Fulbert Freakfinder is looking for some new attractions. Nice… gulp. Meet Stitch Head, a rather cute little monster created by 'the greatest mad scientist in all the world, Professor Erasmus Erasmus'. Stitch Head leads a predictable life, secretly making potions to nicefy all new evil blood thirsty monsters created before they kill everything in sight. Making friends isn't on his radar, what he really wants is to feel that paternal connection he once had with the Profession before he, well you know. It's amazing how when an evil baddie comes along threatening to ruin the 'normality' of the status quo, a friend or two might actually be just the ticket. Stitch Head is dark, witty, clever and a demonstration of how teamwork makes the dream work. Really enjoyable and I'll be looking forward to 'Stitch Head : The Pirate's Eye' next. The book seemed to be second hand, the cover is peeling at the edges and there’s was sticky brown paper on the side which I had to peel off.
