The Landscape

Description:

'The veteran war photographer [Don McCullin] has turned his lens to more peaceful scenes... for his latest book, The Landscape. The images carry a dramatic feel and a preference for stormy skies that reveal an intimacy with conflict and destruction.' Guardian

After a career spanning sixty years, Sir Don McCullin, once a witness to conflict across the globe, has become one of the great landscape photographers of our time. McCullin’s pastoral view is far from idyllic. Though the woods and stream close to his house in Somerset have offered some respite, he has not sought out the quiet corners of rural England. He is drawn, instead, to the drama of approaching storms. He has an acute sense of how the emptiness of his immediate landscape echoes a wider tone of disquiet.

McCullin is based in the geographical centre of southern England. The presence of sacred mounds, hill forts, ancient roads and the nearby monuments of the prehistoric era have shaped his sense of nationhood. But down on the Somerset Levels, he has tramped through the flooded lowlands. The imagery of his home county, ravaged by storms, inevitably projects the associations of a battlefield, or, at least, the views of one intimate with scenes of war.

He is not alone in his preference for darkened clouds over clear skies. McCullin’s West Country is not far removed from the East Anglia of Constable’s Dedham Vale two centuries earlier. His knowledge of his historical predecessors places him deep in a Romantic tradition. His experience as a traveller reinforces the sense of a man on the edge of civilisation under siege. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his repeated views of the glories of Palmyra and of the destruction of this ancient Syrian city.

The Landscape is the last in a long series of books published by Jonathan Cape, which encompasses the entirety of McCullin’s working life.

Review

Wherever they are shot, McCullin’s landscapes – handsomely reproduced on these pages – share an inky dark magnificence, and an unsettling sense of menace.RPS Journal

Don McCullin's spot in the pantheon of great photographers was assured decades ago, yet he still produces
images that stop a dead person in their tracks. This new collection mixes recent with past work, showing how no one has ever been able to accuse McCullin of wielding a frivolous camera. ― Strong Words

The Landscape - the last in a long series of books, which encompasses the entirety of McCullin's working life.

This is a beautifully produced photographic book containing sublime views of England shrouded in mist, snow, water or cowering beneath an overwhelming sky.
And although the majority of the images featured are from Great Britain, it also includes stunning scenes from Syria, Iraq, France, Morocco, Sudan, India and Indonesia.

A large format book of Don McCullin's wonderful B+W landscape photo's. Insufficient adjectives to adequately describe this collection of photographic art. If you've been wondering whether or not to treat yourself to a copy - stop wondering & get one; you will not be disappointed. Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great photographs - superbly printed.

J.P. · 20 April 2022

The skill in the photography and the quality of the printing of this book are of the highest, and therefore provide a most satisfying experience for the viewer. The often quite dark treatment is powerful.I feel that you can dip into this book anywhere and find inspirational pictures. The physical landscapes are not usually awesome in themselves but McCullin's treatment makes them inspiring subjects for us to enjoy.

I am well known for not being a fan of landscape photography. This is a book by one of the best photographers in the country. He makes the pictures his own. He has his own style of Dark and Brooding images and he still uses Film. This book is a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Photography.

Imposing body of work. Strong and moody work. Usual very high standard of this photographer's work finely printed with amazing tonal qualities. Amazing.

Some lovely examples of landscape in this beautifully printed tome.Sadly I had to return mine as there was a page tear and perhaps some images printed a little too dark for my taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landscape "Best Of"

M. · 10 October 2018

Not quite a best of but very McCullin, dark broody landscapes that he is famed for. Nice to see some early if naive shots from the 60s to the more up to date images, just a few new images. He has an ability to leave out what is not needed, as the modern artist tends to punch in all those digital aspects and fill us with to much detail, often not required. It is a skill that is disappearing fast. He inspires me, be inspired yourself and dive in if you love the landscape and the true art of photography..........

Ottimo libro del grande McCullin

L. · 15 January 2020

Ottima stampa, spedizione ben fatta e arrivata nei tempi promessi

Atmosphärisch sehr stark und evokativ.

W. · 5 January 2019

Klare Emfehlung.

Beautiful

absolutely brilliant. I heard about this photographer on BBC Maestro’s Rankin photography course ... the book and photography are breathtaking, what makes it all so much more extraordinary is that this war photographer photographed most of these incredible landscapes near his home. He evokes mood so brilliantly. It is a book I keep returning to.
