Inside the machine: An engineer’s tale of the modern automotive industry

Description:

Now in Paperback! This book tells the story of the modern car industry from the inside. What is it really like to work for the carmakers – the industrial giants that influence the daily lives of millions? How are mass-production cars really designed, engineered, and manufactured? What does it take to engineer a successful vehicle?
The story is told through the author’s own journey around the globe – starting as a young graduate engineer working for Nissan in the UK, to working for Nissan in Japan and, finally, for Renault in France as Chief Engineer of its ‘halo’ sports-car, designed to relaunch the Alpine brand.
It tells the behind-the-scenes story of three well-known vehicles, whose development teams were led by the author – the Nissan Qashqai, the Renault ZOE, and the Alpine A110 – revealing some of the fascinating stories of how these vehicles came into being.
The book seeks to show the real work that goes on behind the glamour of the Motor Shows and the well-honed corporate press releases – work that is sometimes exciting, but often grindingly difficult.

About the Author

David Twohig is an automotive industry veteran, having spent almost three decades in the business.
A native of Cork in Ireland, he started his career with Nissan in the UK in 1992.
During his time with Nissan, and later with Renault after the creation of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, David led the engineering teams responsible for three very different and highly significant vehicles – the first-generation Nissan Qashqai (2007), the Renault ZOE (2012), and finally the award-wining Alpine A110 lightweight sports car (2017).
David was named Engineer of the Year (the ‘Mundy Award’) by the UK’s Autocar Magazine in 2018.
He then spent three years in California’s Silicon Valley, as Chief Technology Officer and Chief Vehicle Engineer at BYTON, a US-Chinese EV start-up, before working at Waymo (the ex-“Google car” autonomous vehicle company).
Of dual Irish-French nationality, he currently lives in France, and works as an independent automotive engineering consultant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and interesting insight into the auto industry

Like others I first encountered the author from his articles on The Intercooler, and as an outsider to the auto industry but interested in how such industries work the book sheds a fascinating light on how a modern vehicle evolves. All the way from initial ideas to the finished product on the road with all the problem solving in between. A lot of people put in a lot of hard work along the way especially when up against timetables. It's definitely not a 9 to 5 job when the pressure is on! Enjoyed the book.

Great book, from a fascinating storyteller who has worked hard and done well from that graft. Having worked in Automotive development this felt so very real and I am sure many identify with the experiences shared here. Great book!

This is the tale of David Twohig, about his life, and his journey through Nissan and later Renault/Alpine.I had thought the book was going to be an insight into the world of car design, but the book focuses more on David’s working life, it’s still an excellent read for anyone interested in the world of cars, and how ideas become reality. His days as an engineering manager reminded me of my own days as an Apprentice in the 1990’s, and so his words triggered some amazing and forgotten memories of my own. This book is very much like Adrian Newley’s excellent book, so if you liked that, then you must read this too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read.

Well worth a read for anyone who has an interest in manufacturing industry. Now we know why the Nissan Qashqai can be troublesome.Looking forward to hearing about your continuing experiences David.

I hope David writes more books about his experiences in the future, I didn’t want this one to end! I am a newcomer to the automotive industry and this gave me the most valuable insight about the inner workings and behind the scenes life of working for automotive giants. Whether a newcomer or not, it is a fantastic read and I could not put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting for car enthusiasts

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic insight into 3 projects that succeeded against the odds

S.F. · 29 March 2023

This book provides a wonderful insight into the competitive world of the car industry, with 3 products that were each game-changers in their day. They serve as great examples of what can be achieved with a lot of hard work and determination, and perhaps not always sticking to the rules. A thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring read from cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, inspiring, recommended for anyone in engineering

Dave has captured the essence of automotive engineering on the frontline of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The account of Dave’s central role in the development of Qashqai, Zoe and A110 dives deep into some of the key events and decisions. He lovingly and respectfully highlights the leadership and support his colleagues provided along the way.Highly recommended if you want a flavour of the high-energy, challenging job of developing ground-breaking cars.

If you love auto technical and industry insight, extremely well told, this is for you.

R. · 4 August 2025

I am familiar with the writer's articles on "The Intercooler", on similar topics, and this in-depth look at the sort of production realities car manufacturers face bringing product to market is a wonderful accompaniment to those. The timing and variety of cars, early EVs, SUVs and the last great ICE production sports car (Alpine) gives a snapshot behind the scense of one of the biggest changes the industry has faced.

Ontzettend informatief, leuk en zelfs spannend

As an automotive engineer myself, I can very much relate to the story presented in this book. It sounds to me like a very genuine tale of the live of one of the "guys higher up" that often make the decisions that we "down in the" R&D function departments really don't agree with (because we want to make the car as good as mechanically possible, which unfortunately isn't what the real world permits). Very interesting and very well written, feels like listening to a mate telling stories. Highly recommended!

Very interesting book with insights on the auto industry

g.d. · 21 December 2022

The author led the development of the new Alpine A110 but this book is about his entire career in the auto industry - it is very interesting and well written. Learned a lot about how those big conglomerates work and the constraints engineers face. I bought it mostly for the alpine contents and that is the smallest part of the book to be honest, but still it was a great read and highly recommended.
