Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to British Birds

Description:

A humorous and very personal guide written by Bill Bailey about his favourite British birds, complete with drawings, notes and cartoons by the comedian himself.

'When herons are spooked they have a habit of vomiting as a defence. Half-digested pieces of eel and water vole skull on your head is not a good look. Just so you know.'

Bill Bailey's wonderfully charming and informative book on the birds he loves is now available as a handy, easy-to-carry pocket paperback.

Packed with the comedian's observations, illustrations and sketches, this edition is perfect for birdwatching expeditions, with new information for proper twitchers, including:
· A 'British Birds' checklist
· A list of the best birdwatching sites in the UK
· Suggestions of bird spotting equipment
· Information about joining a birdwatching club

Bailey takes us on a journey around the British Isles, zooming in on those birds that enthuse him the most. Whether it's what they eat, where they fly to or how they communicate, these birds are always fascinating, and he introduces us to their weird and wonderful ways in a manner that is always entertaining.

If you're a parent who'd like to appear a bit clever when your child asks you the name of a bird; if you want to find a new and healthy hobby that takes you outdoors; or whether, quite simply, you want to understand a bit more about our natural environment and have a laugh at the same time, this is the companion book to have.

Funny and insightful, and positively crackling with energy, knowledge and wit, this beautiful paperback will delight Bailey's fans, birds as well as those who fancy a bit of armchair escapism.

Alongside music and stand-up, one of Bailey's favourite pastimes is birdwatching, which he has been doing since he was a child in the West Country. His fondest memories are of family outings with parents, grandparents and cousins, ticking the birds off in his little
Observer's Book of Birds. As he has said about those formative years, 'birdwatching gave a purpose to the day and a love of the natural world which has carried on into my adult life'.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!!!

Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to Bitish Birds was a Father's Day present, but I need to add in a bit of background to the review.A year ago we moved to a house where the garden and surrounding bushes and trees were home to a goodly number of birds. I bought another book on birds from Oxfam and it really got my interest - my sense of humour. So I bought a couple of feeders and then made a couple and now we have more birds than you can shake the proverbial stick at. They have become a real source of joy to me and as some of them have quite distinguishing features it's good to see them back each day and getting braver in terms of how close they get to you for food and how long they stay in your company. I don't count them, or make lists, but I do love watching their behaviour and interaction with each other. This is one of those books that as you read it you can hear the voice of the author actually saying the words in your head. Like my new found friends the birds, this book brings a lot of joy, at least two or three laughs and smiles per page as well as some great facts (and bonus facts).I have been tempted to just sit down and, in my kids terminology, 'drill it out', but instead I have restricted myself to two birds a night and I am enjoying it all the more for it.Put quite simply it's a great, fun, informative, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable book.Like Bill Bailey? Like Birds? Then this is for you! Thanks for a great addition to my bookshelf bill!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a warm book.

I like bird field guides; they just contain facts, data & identification images. They are cold books. But I also like Bill's book; its written in a conversational style, contains some unexpected facts that I did not know & a sprinkling of light humour. Its a warm book. One example of his humour is a mock Victorian Recipe for Chaffinch Pie which includes:-"Method: Instruct the servants to make a Chaffinch Pie"

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book.

The paperback pocket version is pretty small but doesn't lose its charm without a hardback and it's small enough to take out and about. Drawings are charasmatic and made a great gift for a big bird watching fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and funny. Brilliant.

L.H. · 23 January 2017

If you love Bill Bailey and birds then this book is for you. It's informative, funny and the drawings done by Bill are hilarious. I also love the paper it's written on, as it looks like he's photocopied his notebook, which has cup stains and other marks, just typical of hand written notes. He writes about our most common British birds and is obviously well versed on the subject. You can tell he's a genuine bird lover! I will keep this book to hand as it's lovely to look at, and is full of intestine facts too. I gave it 5 stars as I can't think of one fault!!I actually bought this book for my daughter but have kept it for myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book

Just a lovely book, I really like the humour and the pictures. A great gift for any bird lover in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Funny and Informative Read

R. · 12 February 2020

This really is a smashing book filled with Bill Bailey's humour. It's warm-hearted and funny while providing a huge amount of interesting and useful information. The book is formatted as a facsimile of a scrapbook rather than a traditional text and there are some parts where drawings and images are presented as two-page spreads - these aren't features which always transition pleasingly to ebook formats so while I have a Kindle version some of the appeal is lost and at times text is (very) hard to read, especially on lower-resolution devices. That said I still love it and the five stars are well-deserved!

Great Gift!
