Fascinating, infuriating and exciting, The Vagina Business introduces some extraordinary female revolutionaries and the fantastic promise of tech to transform women's lives - and society - via feminist healthcare. It also spotlights the extent to which craven, misogynistic investors and scientists are blocking a fairer future because they cannot engage with sex differences.
Some scenes will make you want to scream - like the researchers who claimed they couldn't use female mice in tests because their cages were harder to clean, or any of the multiple stories demonstrating colossal unmet health needs, or the case studies of firms profiting from women's shame. But others will have you jumping up and down in delight at the extent to which women are supporting women to innovate - and the vast scale of the sisterhood's imagination.
Gerner renders complex science simple and makes venture capital thrilling. She is a strong writer with a gift for telling a story, and this is a great one.
The Vagina Business is an important book, with significance for our understanding of the impact of structural discrimination on women's health. I hope it is bought and read by many, many people who then advocate for, research and invest in the fairer future that femtech offers.
The Vagina Business is an eye-opening book that everyone needs to read. It shines a light on how women's needs have been routinely dismissed and ignored by science, medicine, and technology. Gerner offers us hope for the future, showing us how the world can be a better place for women when innovators in tech, science, and medicine begin to take our needs seriously. ― Sarah E. Hill, PhD, author of This is Your Brain on Birth Control
If you care about your health and the health of all the women in your life, you should read this book. After reading it, I finally felt heard. I finally felt seen. And it felt so good. Marina Gerner's writing is electric, and The Vagina Business will leave you shocked and energized. It's a terrific page-turner that will transform how every reader sees the worlds of business and technology. ― Jake Knapp, author of the New York Times bestseller Sprint
Marina Gerner's brilliant book should be titled How to Make More Money Than You Ever Dreamed Possible because she is handing all venture capitalists, investors and corporations that opportunity on a plate. The Vagina Business is a must-read - and also, when you buy and read it, a must-display, to overcome the ridiculousness that is holding this sector back. Make sure you show the cover off when you're reading it on the tube, on the plane, by the pool, on the beach, in the office. ― Cindy Gallop, Founder & CEO, MakeLoveNotPorn
In a world where women's health and pleasure have been sidelined, The Vagina Business is a rallying cry for change. This book will expand your mind, and make you rethink how you open your wallet. ― Rena Martine, author of The Sex You Want: A Shameless Journey to Deep Intimacy, Honest Pleasure, and a Life You Love

A revolution driven by women's ideas, businesses and investment is happening and this book shows you how ― Bec Evans, author of How to Have a Happy Hustle and co-author of Written: How to Keep Writing and Build a Habit That Lasts
Energetic, thoroughly engaging reading ... [Gerner's] highly readable book offers hope for positive new ways of not only thinking and talking about female bodies but also improving health outcomes for women worldwide. ― Kirkus Reviews
Gerner has an engaging tone for what is an important and shocking book about how female pain has been ignored and normalised for centuries. Gerner addresses new ways in which society could address health issues in women, including life-saving "smart bras", an urgent requirement given that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the developed world and yet only one-third of participants in clinical trials are female. Her book also deals with fertility, contraception, 'femtech', menopause and the many, many taboos around women's bodies that need breaking. ― The Independent - Books of the Month
Optimistic, readable account of a growing wave of "femtech" innovations and start-ups ... The book charts compellingly the difficulties female entrepreneurs face in securing investment, especially in 'taboo' areas, and issues like medical bias which hold trials back. ― Financial Times
The book is an entertaining and compelling read that gives you a real sense of the personalities involved as well as an idea of the barriers that they continue to face ... Gerner has a nice turn of phrase and a good eye for corporate spin. ― MoneyWeek
Marina Gerner's new book uncovers myriad health innovations for women, offering eye-opening solutions to the ways our medical system snubs female pain. -- Elisa Bray ― The Jewish Chronicle
Gerner amplifies a chorus of femtech founders to explore the products and innovations being developed across the world today. -- Jessica Burrell ― Stylist

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Having a Vagina Is Bad For Your Career
This is an excellent book from Marina Gerner, exploring in great depth the penalties applied to women. In other hands this could be a dry academic tome (and Marina is an academic). The Vagina Business is far from that. Marina has a witty, engaging style. She travelled the world to interview people about their attempts to innovate in women’s health. But it’s not a litany of examples that serve to depress you. Her style is and immediate and inclusive. You almost feel as if you were peeping over her shoulder. Here’s an example:The event is taking place at a private members’ club in a bougie part of London. We are gathering on pastel-coloured chairs, and the air in the room feels like cold wool. There are of course, very depressing bits. How could there not be in a book detailing the issues facing making women’s health mainstream? Here’s another example, when she is talking to Hiromi Marissa Ozaki, a Japanese pop star:As we talk she combines the charisma of a pop star with the critical mind of a professor, which is also a role she has held at the MIT Media Lab and the Tokyo University of Arts. “There are only about 20% of female doctors, and it’s because of deliberate exam rigging,” she says. In 2018, it was revealed that Tokyo Medical University had been rigging exams to discriminate against female candidates. The Last Word on The Vagina BusinessI can do no better than end this piece with Marina’s own ending of the book. For tech to serve women, society must make women’s health a priority. The start ups and institutions we have – what products they create and how they are run, and whether they are good or bad actors – is always going to reflect the values we hold as a society.I have gone on this journey through the world of femtech to shine a spotlight on what is possible. I want more innovation for all of us because we all deserve better. It’s a revolution, and this is only the beginning.Brava, Marina. You can support the revolution by promoting this book. Buy it, get it from the library, talk about vaginas at work, at home, in polite society, in rude society. Challenge the notion that women’s bits are somehow unspeakable. Speak Up! Support the sisterhood! UP THE WOMEN!
5.0 out of 5 stars Must read business book!
What an excellent book about the Femtech industry. The author really digs deep and travels far and wide to give a truly international picture of innovations that will blow your mind!I had to read this slow as so many companies and people she mentioned had to be checked out and followed on social media, some are even immediately interesting as a consumer.I absolutely loved the part about egg freezing to preserve fertility, what a brilliant analysis (frankly just that chapter would be already worth paying for, it’s all you need to know about this hype topic). What is remarkable is that although this is a business book, you will also learn a lot about the female body (aka your own if you are a woman). The book is courageous, challenging and ground breaking just like the movement, plus it’s a funny and engaging read as well! Thank you to the author for this fantastic femtech manifesto, this is just the beginning!
5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting future!
A must-read for anyone interested in innovation in women’s health! The author masterfully highlights groundbreaking advancements while exposing the discrimination these businesses face. With a balance of hard-hitting reality and optimism, this book got me excited about the future!
5.0 out of 5 stars An important lens into health inequality with practical solutions
"The Vagina Business" is an enlightening and thoughtful book that explores women's health and sexuality in a balanced and informative way. The author blends personal stories with scientific research and cultural perspectives, offering a comprehensive look at these topics. By shedding light on often overlooked aspects of women's health, the book is an inspiring read for anyone interested in understanding more about women's health, inequality and what solutions exist to support women. Highly recommend reading or buying for friends interested in these topics.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and highly recommended read!
This is such an interesting read about an area I didn’t know much about before I picked it up. The writer is incredibly knowledgeable and the book has clearly been very well researched with extremely interesting case studies and interviewees throughout. The book is both infuriating in the case it puts forward yet very enjoyable to read at the same time. I would highly recommend this!
5.0 out of 5 stars Vital, fascinating read
I guess it’s no surprise that investment is so male, squeamish and uneducated but that doesn’t make it less frustrating. It’s an important book, a lively and enjoyable read and demonstrated how far we have to go. It reminded me of early HIV work and how getting stakeholders comfortable talking about sex was a significant barrier to progress
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant & Essential Reading
This is a fascinating, inspiring and essential book about technology related to women's health, exploring innovations from all over the world that have the potential to save and transform lives. Marina's prose is warm, accessible, considered, nuanced and extremely informative. A must-read book that should be in every home and has the potential to ignite conversation around femtech.
5.0 out of 5 stars Game changing book!
Required reading for every woman AND man to understand why female health has been deemed less of a priority. And to highlight the pioneers fighting to change this. Great book!
A must read and a must have!
This well crafted book references and tells stories gleaned from the lived experiences of several female entrepreneurs who are working to break barriers and transform women’s healthcare and wellness.Half way through and I felt inspired, mentored and captivated without having to spend the plane or conference ticket to get to meet all these amazing women. Every one should buy this and gift one to their friends. I know I will.
